Zone Fish Oil Review: How Good Is It?

The benefits of fish oil are well known and widely accepted. The problem is, it is not easy to find out a good one out of the wide variety of oils available out there. Zone fish oil is one such oil that is prominent amongst its peers. Let’s find out how good it is and if that is the one you should choose over the others.

Before we evaluate zone fish oil, first let’s take a look at what makes for a good fish oil. The most important factor in evaluating fish oil is the level of DHA and EPA fats that it contains. DHA Omega 3 is the most important kind of fat that the oil can provide us, and it is actually responsible for the multitude of health benefits associated with fish oil. EPA is important too, but not more than DHA.

Another point worth remembering is, our body can easily convert DHA into EPA if the need be. This is a simple chemical process which involves dropping off a couple of double carbon bonds from the DHA molecule. Converting from EPA to DHA is not possible though, because that involves adding two double carbon bonds to the EPA molecule. This is something our body is not capable of. All the more reason to have more DHA than EPA in our oil.

Secondly, the fish oil industry is not regulated by the US FDA. There are a number of quality standards out there – each allowing different levels of impurities in the fish oil. Make sure your oil has been tested according to a strict set of standards and is as pure as possible.

Finally, the price of the oil is a factor too. The product is simple enough – oil extracted from a DHA rich fish, and that has been properly refined. There are no fancy and expensive ingredients, so the oil shouldn’t burn a hole in your pocket.

Now let’s see how the zone fish oil fares on these parameters. The basic zone oil – Omega Rx, contains 1600 mg of EPA and 800 mg of DHA. While the Omega 3 levels are impressive, this does seem to be a bit of an overkill. Experts recommend taking a total of 1000 mg of fish oil a day to get the complete health benefits. There is simply no advantage in taking any more oil than that.

There is a fish oil supplement from a New Zealand company that provides the ideal mix of DHA and EPA in its oil. Each serving of the oil contain more than 280 mg of DHA, more than 120 mg of EPA, and the rest around 500-600 mg of Omega 6 and Omega 9 fats. The relative quantities of DHA and EPA are also adequate in it making for a slightly higher than 2:1 ratio. This is enough to get all the expected health benefits from the oil.

The Zone fish oil is tested according to IFOS standards. The New Zealand oil on the other hand, is tested according to internal standards of the company, which are even stricter than IFOS. This makes their oil slightly safer than the zone oil.

Finally we come to the price comparison. One month’s supply of the zone oil costs an impressive $50.25. Compare this to the other company’s price point of $16.85 and you can see how much difference there is. It is almost three times less than the zone oil’s cost.

Ultimately, whether you choose the Zone fish oil or any other oil, just remember the criteria we have used here to evaluate the oil. Keep it simple and choose the best one. There is no other better health supplement that you can take.
