For the 2008 model year, General Motors introduced to the North American market a luxury crossover model, the Buick Enclave, a seven passenger vehicle that has been well received by the motoring public. Fully outfitted, the Enclave retails for about $40,000, putting the vehicle in a price range shared by comparable Lexus, Acura, and BMW models.
The vehicle's design, luxury level, and passenger carrying capacity has fueled the Enclave's popularity, a crossover that is available in either front or all wheel drive configuration and is powered by a High Feature 3.6L V6 that is paired with GM's six-speed automatic transmission, an offering that helps the FWD Enclave achieve a respectable 24 mpg on the highway.
With this success, comes new opportunities for GM to market the Enclave beyond North America, something the automaker will start to do this month, when the company begins exporting the popular crossover to China. This past summer GM signed a four-year, $800 million (USD) agreement with Shanghai GM (SGM) to export Enclaves to China. The deal comes as China embraces the Buick brand, a market that already sells twice as many Buicks than in the United States.
"Our customers in China are going to fall in love with the Enclave's beauty, luxury and functionality in the same way that this vehicle has captivated buyers here," said Susan Docherty, vice president, Buick-Pontiac-GMC. "Buick has been a revered brand in China for more than 90 years, and Enclave is going to enhance our strong presence in the Chinese marketplace, providing an elegant and premium vehicle built in a world-class facility."
The Buick Enclave is the brand's first luxury crossover and will join a Chinese line up that currently features models not sold in the US, various rebadged Holden, Daewoo, and other GM brand models. More than 400 dealerships across China will offer the Enclave, hoping to repeat the vehicle's success in the fastest growing consumer market in the world.
