The residual gases inside the packages can not be neglected after the accomplishment of the packaging process. The gas contents inside packages after filling and before opening are difficult to master with techniques. Packaging materials with barrier functions can only impede the migration of the gas, and cannot eliminate oxygen (except the packages with deoxygenating techniques) and other gases that have already existed in the packages. If the residual gas exceeds the maximum concentration for product storage, no matter how excellent the high barrier materials are, and how perfect the sealing performances are, the quality guarantee period or the shelf life of the products can not be satisfied. Therefore, we need to test the gas contents left in the packages, and adjust the packaging process.
The residual gas as well as the product absorbed gases can be determined by headspace analysis of the packages, that is, by measuring the gas contents at the top of the packages. Those two kinds of testing only differ in testing time. Gas residue testing should be done soon after the accomplishment of the packaging process. Product absorbed gas testing should be done after a certain period of time when the packaging process has finished. Furthermore, as time goes by, more tests should and comprehensive analysis with gas concentration curves should be done. The reason is that desorption is a slow process. Those tests can be accomplished with Labthink PARAM HGA-01 Headspace Gas Analyzer. We can also accelerate the gas desorption on the product surface by reducing concentration of certain gases in ambient environment.
