It's all very well discussing the benefits of smart homes but most of these simply make our lives more convenient, which can actually be a disadvantage, as it has could cause us to become dependent. Smart homes have the potential to play a much bigger role, when we consider installing them into the homes of those with disabilities. Let's take a look at how the lives of those with disabilities can be made a great deal easier:
Hearing- impaired- This type of user may not no when someone has rang the doorbell, especially if they are nowhere near the door. A smart home solution would... be to have the lights flicker on/off to let them know someone was there, this is more effective in the evening obviously, during the day these users could carry a buzzer that produces a warning that could be considered similar to the silent option on a mobile phone.And here is the rest of it.
visually-impaired- Users would find it tricky to use a graphical interface so speech-recognition technology would help these users a lot. A smart home could also be configured to help them move around the house easier via sensors that are able interface with voice-application and then providing warnings to the user.
autistic-spectrum- Dislike changes in routine and a lack of order causes distress, making them prone to sensory overload. In this case a smart home can be useful in streamlining tasks so that not too much multi-tasking is involved.
