Steve Jobs Transplant & His Secret Life

People from other parts of the world have perceived Silicon Valley as a hub of computer geeks, no pun intended. This southern component of San Franscisco has been pretty much the center of everything high tech for the past decades.  But lately, the media at this part of the planet has leaned towards news about Steve Jobs and his health…and why not?

To start with, there’s not much tabloid-ish phenomena going on at Silicon Valley that’s worth the feasting of media.  Okay, so there’s the animated Cha Cha dance of Apple co-founder, Mr. Steve Wozniak on Dancing with the Stars. Still, other magnates of the IT industry prefer to be away from public eye. Even the Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, who’s supposed to get ahead of  “social networking”, is not that media-prevalent as well. And, when was the last time you heard news about Google execs?

Sure, there are few news-worthy personalities. But generally, people in the IT industry have always been low-key, concentrating more on out-of-the box technological advancements, rather than brewing up some shaking news about themselves.

Like the other big names in the industry, Steve Jobs also steers clear of unnecessary media attention and wants to keep his life as private as possible. He’s not a big fan of interviews. Digging up information about his colorful past, as well as his future plans, is up to the ingenuity of the press. The only times he’s eager to go public are during his stage appearances on Apple events, when it’s all about informing the public on the freshest gadgets and most recent upgrades.

Yes, he is quite a mysterious persona, but for some reason, the media is still fixated on anything Steve Jobs. Without a doubt, Steve Jobs is considered “royalty” in his niche. His rags-to-riches story is definitely a big plus, add the fact that his company has come up with super gadgets that people all over the world are continuously raving about. And just recently, the media wants to capitalize on his success at battling out pancreatic cancer and his recent liver transplant.

Through the years, information about his health condition was always kept at a modest level, but that’s no longer the case. Write-ups came about from left and right, some good, some bad. Spiteful intrigues were thrown at him, saying that he used his big name and fortune in order to hurdle liver transplant candidates who were ahead of him. Some were also questioning why the transplant had to be in sync with the release of the iPhone 3GS. He has his reasons, and his doctors also released statements in his defense.

This is probably just the beginning of a more public Steve Jobs. Only time can tell.

Last weekend, I was at my girlfriend's birthday party shooting the breeze with the people there and met a white guy who told me he had attended a racial diversity conference. He said it was at a packed auditorium, and there was a black man, maybe in his early fifties, who came up to give a talk on stage.

Not everyone gets to read their obituary in the New York Times. Indeed not everyone gets a premature obituary in the Times. So I guess it was a triumph of sorts. I got fired and the paper of record actually cared. Friends from around the world saw the story and sent bracing words. I read it Wednesday morning with my heart pounding. Not exactly what I would have written myself but hey… almost totally kind.
