Dealing With Out Of Control Teen -- Defiance

Defiance is failure to comply with your request within a reasonable period. Defiance is failure to complete the task requested. Defiance is failure to observe rules set. In Out Of Control Teen guide, we shall try to understand a bit more with regards to defiance. Here are some factors that can contribute to teenager defiance:

-- Teenager’s characteristic
-- Parent’s characteristic
-- Stress
-- Parenting method

Some characteristics are inborn like personality and temperament. You will find that some teenagers are just more easily frustrated and irritable by events around them. They also can get angry faster and are more emotional than others. These teenagers can be easily provoked which lead them to develop a more defiance attitude in defense.

Likewise, the parent’s characteristic also plays an important factor here. If there is a big mismatch on the parent and teenager character, this may lead to conflicts. Example the parents are very organize in nature and their teenager is the exact opposite. This will be a source of conflict leading to arguments and then developing into a defiance attitude from the teenager.

Stress is always a fuel for conflict. When under stress the parent’s patience and tolerance may be sapped even for minor misbehavior. If stress is not managed, such conflict will occur more frequently leading to the teenager putting up defensive shield in the form of a defiance attitude.

Your parenting method can be a source of conflict as well. Every parent does set certain expectation on their teenager and the parenting method reflects that expectation. Example a parent expects their teenager to do well in school and their parenting method will set the conditions that will ensure that their teenager will do well in school. When teenagers grow up, it is natural for them to have a more independence streak. This will lead to the teenager becoming more defiance when the condition set by the parent restricts their independence.
