If your in a band its just as great fun if not better!
So when you walk into a shop that specialises in the music industry then don't you get attracted by the appearance of DVD's and CD's? Believe it or not 52% of people by products because they are well presented. But in comparison to two products people are going to go for your Cd if its better Presented!
You do not have to be the most artistic person in the world but it does help if you do have some visual artistic ability. If you can not afford a professional printed Cd or DVD cover then try and find a sponsor. But firstly you need to know how much they cost and how much you are going to put your CD on the Market. The main thing that you need to do with Cd covers is establish whom your target audience is as then it will visually sell it to them which is everyone's main aims.
You can burn the CD your self but creating the cover is much more important because if you use your printer then it is never maintained to a high standard and people will not buy a CD that looks chipped!
Once you have a quality cover then you can aim to get a manager who will be able to lift you as a group!
But the impression all comes from the 'look'.
