The latest and the best in tennis gear

If you were to see the tennis gear people wore about 100 years ago, you wouldn’t recognize them as the same designer clothes that are being worn by the likes of Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova or Nadal today. At that time, men had to wear full-length pants and cotton t-shirts. It was formal attire for both sexes and white was the only color allowed.

Contrast that with the stunning styles, designs and variety that you see tennis stars wearing on court today, and you will agree that tennis gear has come a long way.

These days, tennis gear is allowed to be flashy, although clothes on court are still predominantly white. What is even more interesting is that tennis players consciously opt for clothes that are comfortable and more suitable for long hours of play. Comfort, safety and looks – in that order.

Modern tennis gear is made to boost player performance. That is why the old 100% cotton line is being displaced by polyester fabrics like Coolmax and Wickaway. Fortunately, both men’s and women’s gear are available in a spectrum of colors, designs and knits. But, don’t be fooled by the looks. It’s not the looks but how good the fabric is that matters.

Cotton has a distinct disadvantage when it comes to wicking moisture. Cotton is breathable and comfortable, but it also retains moisture for a longer period of time. On the other hand, spandex and nylon breathe well and do not retain moisture. So, they keep the player cool and dry even after long hours of play under the sun. Of course, it also helps that these fabrics retain their shape and do not look crumpled or creased after hours of play. So, a player doesn’t have to worry about his clothes looking tired by the time the match ends and he has to step up to receive a trophy!

A warm-up suit is an important part of the tennis gear. Suits are typically made of two pieces, and are long sleeved and full length. You’d have seen champions arriving at the court wearing their warm up suits. These suits retain heat and keep the body of the player warm thereby loosening the muscles. Warm up suits are removed before the match commences.

Tennis gear is incomplete without the all important accessories. These accessories complete the designer look! Tennis shoes and socks are stylish and serve the purpose of keeping players safe and comfy. Sneakers specifically designed for tennis are preferred by top notch players because these suit court conditions the most. Matching headbands, wristbands and hats keep you cool, dry and looking good.
