She disagrees, however, with the show’s reluctance to integrate every show and eventually causes racial riots around the show. Marissa Perry makes her Broadway debut as Tracy, but she has played the role before at regional shows. She has also been in other regional shows like Wild Mushroom and Princesses. Cheers funnyman George Wendt drags it up for his role as Tracy’s mother, Edna. The Emmy Award-winning actor has been on stage in productions like 12 Angry Men and Art. Ashley Parker Angel plays Tracy’s love interest Link Larken. Angel was part of the hit pop group O-Town. Tevin Campbell plays Tracy’s friend Seaweed, and Ashley Spencer plays Tracy’s evil nemesis, Amber.
Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan wrote the book for the production, based off of a 1988 John Waters movie of the same name. O’Donnell’s other plays include That’s It ,Folks, The Nice and the Nasty and Vertigo Park. Meehan’s writing credits include co-writing the Tony Award-winning Producers among with others like I Remember Mama and Annie Warbucks. Mark Shaiman wrote the music and some lyrics and arrangements for the show and won a Tony and Grammy for his efforts. He has worked on many films including Sleepless in Seattle, The American President and A Few Good Men. Scott Wittman also worked on the Lyrics. He has worked with stars like Nathan Lane, Rufus Wainwright, Raquel Welch, Martin Short and Bette Midler.
Hairspray stands out as part of the short list of must-see shows in Broadway. What makes it stand out so much from other ‘60s era musicals is its confrontation of prejudices during that time and now.
