I have been writing and solving fake murders since 1989 and have been writing murder mysteries with my wife and partner, Nora, since 2005. Sharpo Incorporated’s interactive murder mystery dinner theater production of “ THE EL CID VAMPIRE Mystery” opens Friday, October 2nd and playing all month at El Cid Dinner Theater on Sunset Blvd in Los Angeles. This show marks our 5th month of mystery, intrigue, suspense and laughter at the historic and hidden gem of Silver Lake.
The El Cid is over 100 years old and is modeled as a 16th century Spanish tavern. It can be very creepy and spooky at night. When you enter, you down, down, down the stairs invoking the tavern in the Vampire Movie : “From Dusk Til Dawn” featuring George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino. Could this historic Los Angeles night spot really be a Vampire’s lair? Our cast intends to find out. Look for an appearance this month by Janice Fischer, who wrote the Warner Brothers Classic Vampire film,”The Lost Boys”.
This dinner theater mystery also continues the paranormal thread that has permeated other mysteries we have produced together. Our other spooky mysteries include “La Pintura Frecuentada” about a haunted painting and “Murder House” about a cursed house.
When Nora and I first began writing murder mystery plays together, we thought long and hard about the genre. Obviously for it to be a murder mystery, there has to be at least one murder in the plot. Our shows usually have at least two and sometimes three homicides, all with a different Modus operandi. Sometimes there are more than one killer but there is always a connection of all events to an overall scheme. There is also plenty of intrigue in trying to solve a who-dun-it, but what about life’s other mysteries- the unexplained mysteries that defy natural laws – we asked ourselves, why couldn’t our mysteries include the element of these age old mysteries as well?
