In it's 15th year of Shakespeare Theatre , The Michigan Shakepseare Festival has announced this year's festival lineup.
The 2009 season will be highlighted by Shakespeare classics "The Tempest" and "As You Like It," the musical revue "Side By Side By Sondheim" and the free family show "Laffin' School."
Shows are scheduled for July 14 through August 2, 2009 and will be presented in the Potter Center on the campus of Jackson Community College.
"Although the two Shakespeare plays tackle similar central themes -- redemption, familial reconciliation, and the essential nature of humanity that leads to self discovery, resulting in reunions, revelations and joy -- the approach and artistic journey that the plays and plots take are very dissimilar," explained Festival Artistic Producer John Neville-Andrews.
"'As You Like It' is a romantic and joyous play, full of humor and surprises. 'The Tempest' exposes revenge, bitterness and the rough magic of torment, before it so beautifully ends in harmony, love and forgiveness.
"Seeing these two plays together, I feel, will take the audience on a thrilling theatrical journey that unveils the true essence of the human condition as only Shakespeare can."
Neville-Andrews will direct "The Tempest" while former Festival actor Tommy Gomez returns for a second season as a director, heading "As You Like It."
For the second consecutive year, the Michigan Shakespeare Festival will present a popular musical option as Matthew Davis and Ann Holt team up to direct "Side By Side By Sondheim," featuring some of the most popular songs from one of Broadway's most successful composers, Stephen Sondheim.
"We have great hopes for the 2009 season," Festival Chairman Rick Davies said. "While the economy nationally and particularly in Michigan is horrible, the, Michigan Shakespeare Festival offers affordable entertainment right here without having to travel to another state or another country."
