Einstein is quoted as saying, “When you are courting a nice girl an hour seems like a second. When you sit on a red-hot cinder a second seems like an hour. That's relativity.”
The truth is plain, we each have our own individual perception of time in so far as how long it takes and of “what” it is. But what I am about to show you is quite an extraordinary piece of reality that you will swear is fiction.
The Proverbs say that a fool will feast on the fruit of his words. Words are incredibly important not because of the word themselves but because of the message that they convey. The words that we speak are heard by all around us, but they are also heard by us. A self evident truth but one which is incredibly important.
You see, if you pick up any text book on the human mind and how it works you are bound to find a statement similar to the effect that the subconscious mind does not have a sense of humor, it’s task is to receive information and record it. With this recorded information we create (and preserve) a file of “filters”, these filters help us to “know” things, often called short cuts.
One exmplae of a shrot cut is this prprgarah. Your mnid has been trniaed to raed with seped and so it ckcehs the frsit and lsat letetr and then ”guesses” waht the wrod maent to say. I gave an eaxmple of this type of text to my 7 year old who was able to read the entire piece perfectly, so it goes to show that we start learning these short cuts early on in life.
Another example is a juggler. A juggler knows where to catch the ball just by looking at the peak of the throw, based upon this information, and the recorded observations over time of how gravity interacts with objects, it is easy to “know” where the ball will fall and thus he places his hand in the right place at the right time.
Now take a moment and consider the people that you know, find an example of a person who, every time you see them tells you how little time that they have. Next, ask yourself the following questions, “How much do they seem to do?” and then more interestingly “How much do they get done?” You see that these two questions are significantly different.
Every time a person says that they have no time, their subconscious records that information but also the message that “I can’t get everything done that I need to” which is what the real message was. (or something like that) After faithfully recording the information our subconscious mind then moves onto the next phase of operation, create and preserve the filter. The best way to preserve a filter therefore is to make sure that the results meet expectations of the filter, in other words, to make sure that it is true and in this case we don’t get everything done. After all at the end of the day as long as I don’t have enough time, I am happy to accept that I couldn’t get it all done anyway because I knew that at the beginning of the day…. Right????
So it’s all in the words is it, positive attitude, conceive and believe stuff, I hear some of you scoff. Well yes and no. you see there is more.
Imagine for a moment that you are a senior level business executive, working 70+ hours per week, earning a great salary but putting in he hard yards, If someone showed you a way to get the same work done, to a better quality, and save you 2 hours per day, would you do it? Of course.
Now consider, If you are the head of a department, and your team of 10 could get there work done, to a better standard in 2 hours less each day, would you expect them to? Yes most likely. And, as department head, would you reduce head count by 2 .5 people? Whether it’s for the shareholders or your bonus, doesn’t much matter right now, the question is would you? And finally, one last question, would you be happy being one of those 2.5 heads counted down?
The conflict we are discussing here is between cost Efficiency v’s cost Effectiveness. It’s efficient to reduce head count, but not very effective, you see we all face a concern that if we are seen as having plenty of time then perhaps we just aren’t doing enough. That is a real fear that is ever present in just about everyone you will ever meet. After all we all have a need to be useful and needed.
So you see it is the words that we use, the way we use them, and the deeply rooted need for acceptance and value, intertwined with emotions surrounding the fear of rejection. Simple really wouldn’t you say….
By now you are either rolling your eyes in disbelief or perhaps there might just be something to this. Either way, tell yourself you do have the time and can contact me at http://au.linkedin.com/in/jonathangrigg1
