Punch it in, throw it from a height of 12 feet, roll in it on hard concrete or smooth marble, and spot the sea shell like trendy design from anywhere. The era of suitcases have come down to suitcases like Samsonite Cosmolite; The strongest and the Lightest ever. Add in stylish also. Suitcases were not always like this. Like everything else on this Earth, suitcases have also evolved.

Humans have always traveled the earth and to travel you need something to carry your belongings. This is true from the time of the first humans. Prehistoric man was nomadic and traveling was the way of life. Prehistoric men made use of rudimentary wood-ribbed backpack which supported a leather bag.

Till the time the Roman Empire arrived stone and concrete roads were in existence and people had begun to travel for tourism. Romans packed their belongings in what may be the world’s first suitcases.

Refinement continued to come in the models of luggage. By the 17th century, there was a need of baggage which could withstand inclement weather and years of use on unpaved roads. Trunk, a.k.a traveling chest or 'donkey box' was the popular choice for this. Woods such as Cedar, Oak, and Pine were used to construct trunks.  Classy trunks came covered with hides such as deer, horse or cowhide. Coverings also included paper, canvas, plain or embossed tin. Brass ornaments such as tacks, nails, and locks were used to decorate the trunks.

Humans look out for constant innovation and eventually the trunks started to become heavy and cumbersome. This led to the introduction of the modern suitcase. It was cheaper and lighter. Made out of plastic, cloth, vinyl or leather, it could retain its shape.

Ultimately the need came to do away with expending energy in carrying the weight of the suitcase around. So now we have built-in wheels for a much easier maneuverability: two in-line wheels for straight drag-around, or four multi-directional wheels that can spin. Telescopic handles were added for handling and transfer.
