Handyman tips-understanding the functions of an electric drill

POWER DRILLS
The electric drill is probably the most sold tool in the tool market today-and lets face it rightly so,because there ir
not a lot you can do around the home without one-for anything you want to attach to the wall you need a drill to first of all
make holes for the plugs that will hold the screws.
Basic workings are that:
when the drill is plugged in the trigger activates the motor which turns the gears like the wheel of a car, which in turn
spin the chuck holding the drillbit in the rotational diection in which the selector dial was programed-IE; forward or reverse.
some drill come with a "Hammer" function which means that it can easilly drill through concrete and hard materials much
easier than a normal drill.
When choosing a drill there are ceartain terms to look out for:
1.Hammer action-a semi pumping action like someone wearing boxing gloves and punching a wall several times with speed.
This action helps to break up brick, concrete and any hard materials.

2.Reverse action- this function allows you to remove the drillbit from a tight hole or to remove screws-a useful feature.

3.Trigger lock-this is a seperate button on the dril-when depressed it keeps the drill running continuously unti the trigger
is depressed again.
There are two basic types of drill
1.corded:uses a flex and has to be pluged into the mains
ADVANTAGE: deliveres more power for tougher jobs
DISADVANTAGE: Not flexible because you always have a long trail of wire behind you.

2.cordless:This is more widely used than the corded version
ADVANTAGE:fully mobile can be used anywhere without the need to look for an electrical outlet.
DISADVANTAGE:battery life is limited and it takes about an hour on average to charge the batteries so you always need 2 batteries
so that whilst one is charging you have another one to use whilst you are waiting .

Maintenance

1.clean the dust from the machine when you have finished using the drill.
2.wipe the drill after every use
3.spray maintenance spray over the motor and exposed parts after use.

Working

1.hold the drill securely-wher the hole is tight around the drillbit the drill itself could slip from your hands.
2.use sharp drill bits, this will help to reduce the pressure and force needed to operate the dril thereby reducing the wear on the
motor.
3.make sure the chuck is tightened properly to avoid the drillbit spinning.

SAFETY FIRST

1.wear protectice eyewear when usin drills
2.do not wear loose clothing and remove all jewelry
3.unplug te drill before you attempt to change any bits.
4.always remove the chuck key before operating the drill.
5.do not allow children to get near the drill
6.always use an RCD when using the drill outside

TROUBLESHOOTING

noisy drill

1.worn chuck bearings-spray maintenance spray onto the chuck and operate if that does not work then hvae it serviced
2.worn gears-look for broken teeth-oil the gears with gear oli the operate and test-if this does not solve the problem
  then have the drill serviced.
3.dirty motor and fan-use a vacum cleaner to remove the dust from the fan and motor-spray maintenance spray over the
fan and motor-test.

drill bit slipping

check the condition of the chuck-replace if necessary

drill does not work at all

1. blown fuse or fauty plug-check and replace as necessary
2. faulty motor-spray maintenance spray over the bushes and contacts to see if this frees the mechanism-otherwise have it serviced.
3. loose or faulty connections-open up drill and make sure none of the connections have not come loose.
