Tips for First-Time Carpet Cleaner Buyers

Carpet cleaners, also known as carpet shampooers or carpet extractors, come in all sizes and shapes. One can find carpet cleaning machines on the market specifically designed for residential use, commercial use, industrial applications, and even for auto detailing. However, selecting the right machine and the right supplier can be difficult. Here are some tips to guide you in the right direction.

Why First Time Buyers Need Tips

The problem most first time buyers of carpet cleaners face is often a problem of too many choices. With the proliferation of the internet, information about carpet cleaning machines is in abundance. Going online can result in consumers being bombarded by many different features, options, and technologies. This often leads to a great deal of confusion and even purchasing the wrong machine for the application at hand.

First, Know How Carpet Cleaners Work

Their main function is obvious: cleaning carpets and upholstery. However, the operation of carpet cleaners is more complex.

The first stage involves spraying a liquid, usually a mixture of water and a cleaning agent on to the mats, carpets, and upholstery that are to be cleaned. It is better to use green chemicals as cleaning agents to eliminate any risk of harm to the user, the carpet, or the environment. The operator should let the solution dwell on the carpet.

Next, carpet cleaners inject water and solution into carpets. With the carpet extractor wand in hand, the operator agitates the surface with a wand, which results in the formation of residue that contains dirt, dust, and other impurities on the surface as well as the cleaning agent applied. The third and final stage involves extracting this residue from the surface.

One of the most important technologies available in today’s top carpet cleaners is low-flow technologies. Low-flow carpet extractors use less water and leave carpets less wet. This means carpets cleaned with low-flow machines dry in as little as 2 hours, compared to 24 hours required by traditional units.

Next, Know the Components of Carpet Cleaners

The main component is a pump that injects water and cleaning solution into the carpet. The efficiency of the pump determines the output power. For normal residential cleaning works, carpet cleaners with an output pressure level of 100 psi would suffice. For more demanding commercial cleaning, one has to opt for a carpet cleaner with a higher output pressure rating. At present, the output pressure of carpet cleaners can range up to 500 psi.

These devices contain two tanks. One tank is to hold the water and the other for cleaning solution, which is known as solution tank. Carpet cleaners with tank sizes up to 17 gallons are available on the market. The higher the capacity of the tank, the more convenient it is for the operator, as refilling the tank frequently is not required.

The device also contains a recovery tank, where the absorbed dirt and other residues are kept. The capacity of the recovery tank varies from model to model, with latest models having a capacity as high as 15 gallons.

Carpet cleaners also have a wand for agitating the surface and a vacuum for absorbing the dust and dirt residue. In some cleaning applications, one might need hot water output. Therefore, it is better to opt for a model that features a heating element to attain high temperatures up to 210°F. While heat can increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the machine, it can also damage delicate carpet fibers. So, beware of the types of carpets you will clean before purchasing carpet cleaners.

The best advice that first time carpet extractor buyers can take is to purchase from a reputable distributor, with a range of carpet cleaning machines and supplies, who will work with the customer to fit the right products to their needs.
