Usain Bolt - the Fastest Man in the World
On Saturday, August 16 2008, a tall and spirited Jamaican man named Usain Bolt became the fastest man to ever run the 100m. In just 9.69 seconds he out ran his competition with an ease that had never been seen before, breaking both the other runners in the field and his previous record of 9.72 seconds in the process. What was most amazing about his win was the ease in which it was done, the total dominance that he appeared to have over the entire field.
He started on a fairly even level with the rest of the runners, but between the 30 and 60 metre mark he streaked to the lead and began to dominate the race. By the 60 metre mark he was well and truly clear of all the other runners and there was no longer any doubt as to who would be the 2008 Olympic 100 metre champion. With so many people in the world training to run this race, and with the 100 metres being such a short race, you would think that the competitors would be evenly matched and that the finish line would be cluttered with lots of men running a fairly similar time. But you would be wrong, as Usain Bolt was the only one there, at least 2 metres ahead of the nearest competition.
What was so unique and special about his victory was the ease that it was done and the total control that he seemed to yield over his opposition. No one before in the history of the Olympics has been able to pull of such a magnificent and easy looking victory in such a world class event. It makes you wonder how much faster humanity can run before the records stop being broken, as surely this can't go on forever. If Usain Bolt stays in this type of form though, it would not be surprising to see the records breaking for many years to come.
Some people have criticized Bolt for celebrating before the race was even over, as he obviously could have run even faster. He replied saying that he only wanted to break the world record by a little bit, after all, he has to leave something for himself to do in the future.
