Project management is the discipline of planning, organizing, and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives. But how exactly do you go about achieving a successful project with little or no training? And, are there any fundamental activities that should be carried out, across the board? Here are a few areas in which many project managers seem to fall short.
Communication
Effective project managers are usually exceptional communicators. This is important on all levels of a project for many different reasons. Firstly, project management is, without exception, about teamwork and change.
Teamwork requires effective communication in order to produce a successful and unified result. As the saying goes, “a chain is only as strong as it’s weakest link”, and in terms of project management, a team is only as strong as the least-informed member. Good communication will make way for easy teamwork.
Secondly, project management is always about change, and people tend to shy away from change, unless they know what’s going on. Communication the activities and outcome surrounding your project, to all parties concerned will go a long way in contributing to the success of that project.
Measurement
If project management is taking place, it usually means there was a need for change or for something new to come about to meet a new or changing need. It is vital that the project is currently weighed up against that need, or at least the objectives, throughout the time it takes to complete the project.
If things change, the project needs to change. If the need disappears, there is no longer a reason to carry out a project with no real use. Knowing when to steer direction or when to quit will come about via constant measurement and comparison against objectives set at the start of the project.
Training
If project managers or team members require training, then send them to a project management course. Do no cut corners when it comes to having well-informed staff and team members. A training course will bring your attention to areas of focus and help to introduce you to effect project management structures.
This does not mean that you should rely on a training course to ensure that a project will run itself, and run itself smoothly. It is important that you check on project quality and offer guidance and support where it is required.
