Many people dream of running their own small business. Many times this dream comes at 7:30 AM Monday morning as they are getting ready for yet another week stuck in the ratrace. Or maybe they get this idea after their boss has looked at them funny because they had to ask for time off to take care of a sick relative.
Whatever the case, you are contemplating starting your own small business. Here are some things to consider before you take the leap into entrepreneurship.
Can you handle spending lots of hours alone? When you run a small business you may spend a lot of time alone. When you had a job you had your coworkers to talk to during the day. You will probably not have that when you start your own small business. You have to be ready for the loneliness that can occur when you run your own business.
Are you self motivated? I know this word has been beaten into the ground. When you run your own business, you have to be able to motivate yourself to spring into action and get things done when they need to get done. If you tend to slack off when the manager walks away from your desk, then running your own business might not be a good idea.
Are you prepared for an inconsistent income? When small businesses are in startup mode income can be quite sporadic. If the idea of not knowing where your next dollar is coming from scares you to death, you might want to keep your job. A small business owner has to be ready to handle whatever life dishes out.
Small business ownership can be a dream come true for most people. It can also turn out to be your worst nightmare. Be sure that you're ready for this both financially and emotionally. If you've prepared yourself for this properly, you'll do fine with your new endeavor.
