Madhav National Park is rich in scenic beauty. The park is well-known for its tigers, particularly the white tigers.

About Madhav National Park

Madhav National Park is located in the Sivpuri district of Gwalior area in northwest Madhya Pradesh in India. It has a total area of about 354 square kilometer and was created in the year 1959. The park is open throughout the year but the great time to visit is from the months of October to February.

It offers numerous opportunities of sighting a wide variety of wildlife with various terrain of forest being mixed, deciduous and dry, wooded hills as well as flat grassland around the lake. The major tree species found in Madhav National Park are Palash, Tendu, Dhawda, Kerdhai, Salai, Khair and much more.

The principal wild animal species that populates this park is the deer. Other species are the sambar, nilgai, four-horned antelope or chausingha, sloth bear, blackbuck, the common langur and leopard.

The park is equally prosperous in avifauna. The Chandpatha and artificial lake are the winter home of gadwall, mallard, teal, pintail, pochard and migratory geese. The great site for bird viewing is where the forest track passes through the rocky stream which flows from the waste weir.

The species that normally frequent this spot are the white-breasted kingfisher, Indian pond heron, large pied wagtail and red-wattled lapwing. Its avifauna includes the golden oriole, Asian paradise flycatcher, purple sunbird, laggar falcon, white ibis, painted stork and commorant.

The landscapes of Madhav National Park are marked by undulating hilly and plain regions. It is surrounded by Vindhya Range. The natural beauty of this park is simply creates and enticing mystery around. You could find a lake within the park. The forested mountain sheltered a large number if wild animal. Hunting is totally banned inside.

How to Reach Madhav National Park

There are many ways to reach the park. First is by rail. The Kottayam is the closest railway station to the park. It is at the distance of approximately 15 kilometers away.

Foreigners can take the plane. The closest airport to the park is the Kochi Airport Nedumbassy which is situated 106 kilometers away from the park.

Sights to See at Madhav National Park

Madhav Sagar Lake and Sakhya Sagar Lake

Madhav Sagar Lake and Sakhya Sagar Lake was created on the Mainer River in the year 1918. These 2 rivers are significant biodiversity support systems in Madhav National Park besides numerous seasonal and perennial streams and nallahs.

The Sakhya Sagar Lake is located on the border of forests of the Madhav National Park. On the coasts of this lake is a boat club or called the Sailing Club. Sakhya Sagar Lake is the home of several reptiles. Species that could be seen here are the monitor lizard, Indian python and mugger crocodile or marsh.

George Castle

George Castle was constructed in the year 1911 by the Scindia ruler Jyajii Scindia. This is set within the Madhav National Park along its top point. Its main purpose then is for King George V of the UK's overnight halt from tiger shooting. He was to pass this way during the day of his visit to India.

It so happened that the King can also shoot a tiger along the way itself. This means, he did not even stop at the Madhav National Park. It further offers unique and attractive views of the downhill area and the lake's surroundings from this point, especially at sunset.
