Amble, know as Amble by the sea until 1985, is a small town in Northumberland, England. It is a seaport on the North Sea coast. It lies at the mouth of the River Coquet, and the nearby Coquet Island is clearly visible from its beaches and harbour.
The town owes its growth and prosperity to the 19th century coalfields from which it used to ship coal to southern England and the Continent, but as this declined so did the fortunes of the town.
Today, Amble is Northumberlands most important fishing centre north of the Tyne, and leisure sailing has also become important, the town has many good shops, pubs and ideal fast food and restaurants.
The development of an award winning marina on the site of the former has brought new life to the town, and it is once again a busy harbour town.
Alnwick Garden is a most visited tourist attraction whilst the adjacent castle has been the setting for scenes in several major feature films, including the first two Harry Potter films. It is not hard to understand Alnwicks growing reputation across the country as a must see visitor destination.
Coquet Island, located one mile south east of the river mouth, was a popular retreat in the time of St. Cuthbert. Today the island is a very popular place to visit. It is held as an RSPB reserve and is used by many native and visiting birds as a nesting place, particularly the terns which return each summer.
Englands Industrial Revolution was fuelled by coal and powered by the railways there was no more important supplier of coal than Northumberland. Today, deep coal mining in Northumberland is mostly just a proud memory, especially at the Wood horn Colliery Museum, near Ashington, not to far away.
A number of major Arts Centres and Theatres, each of which produces regular new programmes of events, including pop, folk and orchestral concerts, plays, dance events and exhibitions can be found in the town.
The weather is typical of the northeast of England. The summer months of July and August are the best times to visit.
Accommodation can be found in the town or near by and will suit all budgets. It ranges from tent and camping to bed and breakfasts to five star hotels.
Forms of transport include rail, bus and car.
A place to live or visit. Come and see for yourself and you will have a great time.
