Blackpool Basics

Blackpool is a seaside town that is located in Lancashire, England. It lies along the coast of the Irish Sea and has an estimated population of around 142,900. Blackpool is very popular amongst tourists and British holiday makers and has been ever since the start of the 19th century.

Blackpool is, and always has been dependent on tourism. During the time period of 1900-1950 Blackpool thrived from factory workers who took their annual holidays there. Old photographs of the town show that the beaches were crowded with tourists and promenades were full of holiday makers.

The town itself now has more hotels and B&B’s than the whole of Portugal but has experienced a dramatic decrease in the amount of tourists it attracts ever since cheap air travel was introduced during the early 1960’s.

Even though the seaside town has lost many of its tourists to warmer, more Mediterranean locations, Blackpool still remains as the most popular seaside resort in the UK.

One of the biggest attractions in Blackpool is the Pleasure Beach which is the country’s most popular free attraction which has around 6 million visitors each year. Other tourist attractions in Blackpool are the Blackpool illuminations and the Blackpool Tower. Along with these attractions Blackpool remains as a summer events venue, which is home to variety acts that consist of big names such as Ken Dodd, Roy Chubby Brown and Peter Kay.

There are many transport links in Blackpool, consisting of buses, trams, railways and taxis. Blackpool also has its own airport; Blackpool International Airport.

As previously mentioned there are many <a onClick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" href=" http://www.travelsupermarket.com/c/hotels/england/blackpool/">hotels in Blackpool</a>. <a onClick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" href=" http://www.travelsupermarket.com/c/hotels/england/blackpool/">Blackpool hotels</a> are often misconceived as being dirty and run down due to the town's reputation, but thanks to the new regeneration scheme there are a lot of luxury <a onClick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" href=" http://www.travelsupermarket.com/c/hotels/england/blackpool/">cheap hotels in Blackpool</a> available.
