When visiting Mexico, renting a car can be an excellent way to truly explore the country and experience some of the remoter areas.

There is a great variety of car rental agencies throughout Mexico, the majority of which are based in the major cities like Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and Puebla. Although the legal driving age is 18, you have to be 25 or over to rent.

Although local car rental companies may offer discounted rates, they often do not include tax and insurance; it is therefore, advisable to stick to the major international agencies, or use online search engines to pre-book.

The rate you will have to pay will depend on a number of factors, such as age, region, type of car and the duration of rental. Its worth noting that most of the international rental agencies offer discounted rates for weekly and monthly rentals.

Although a UK driver’s licence will suffice, it’s advisable to obtain an international drivers licence before leaving for Mexico. This will mean less hassle if you run into any trouble with the Mexican authorities.

It’s a well known fact that 90% of accidents in Mexico happen at night, so try to restrict driving to daylight hours. Also, be wary of hitchhikers and foreign objects in the road, as these are popular methods employed by thieves to trick motorists into stopping.

It’s advised to take good care of your car rental, as agencies will often charge outrageous prices for the smallest of scratches. Particular care should be taken in cites, as parking spaces can be tight, and speed bumps can be hazardous at high speeds.

Lastly, if you do run into any trouble, such as a minor accident with another party, its best to try and come reach an agreement on the spot as the authorities tend to make the process more time consuming and costly.
