Car Hire - a Guide to Driving in New Zealand

Known as the "Land of the Long White Cloud", New Zealand is a sparsely populated country, made up of 2 main islands. Considering its size New Zealand is a country crammed full with majestic scenery, exhilarating activities and a population world renowned for being friendly, honest and helpful.

The only regret many visitors to the country have is that they didn't get chance to see all of New Zealand's countryside. Even though the country has a well developed bus system and a couple of scenic rails journeys, hiring a car and making your own way round is sure to ensure your not left with any regrets.

To drive in New Zealand you need to be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's licence from your home country. If you intend to stay longer than 12 months you will need to obtain a New Zealand drivers licence.

Renting a car in easily done, with all the major rental companies common place throughout the country, along with numerous smaller companies. Renting from one of the bigger car firms usually comes with multiple benefits, notably one-way-rental. This allows you to pick up your car in Auckland, the northern most city and drop it off before getting on the ferry and picking up another on the southern island. This can save on the cost of having to ferry a vehicle to and from the islands.

As this is a popular option for many travellers, you may be able to find some good relocation deals by choosing to drive south to north instead.

The quality of roads throughout the country is generally very high, with traffic levels very low, meaning you can take as long as you like admiring the breathtaking scenery. You can wind your way down from the snow-capped mountains, through the lush green rainforests and finally relax at the coast on one of the many sweeping golden beeches.

As mentioned, car hire is easily achieved throughout the country, through the numerous car hire firms. Finding cheap car hire quotes is best done online and within plenty of time.
