And Now for Something Completely Different
Ever considered skiing in the morning and dining by the sea for lunch? Or how about trekking through beautiful rivers followed by a traditional folk sing-a-long in the evening? Believe it or not, your luxury holiday in Greece can be spiced up to include all these. This might take quite a bit of research to add on to a luxury beach or island escape, but it is definitely worth the effort to make for a Greece holiday with a difference.
The geography of Greece is diverse, with high mountain ranges, lush vegetation and beautiful coastlines. Accommodation in Greece is reasonably priced, so your budget could be stretched to combine a luxury holiday in Greece with action-packed activities everyday. And you could even learn a new skill such as photography while you're at it.
Snowboarding Near the Mediterranean
A massive 75% of Greece is covered by mountains, the tallest of which reach over 2000m. There are 18 ski resorts in the country, a fact which few people are aware of. Most people don't expect a holiday in Greece to include snow sports, but the resorts are there should you wish to experience them.
Ski resorts in Greece are generally open from about the end of December to mid April, after which time the snow tends to get slushy during the middle of the day. Of course, these ski resorts are not the best in the world, and some are only open on the weekends, but they are certainly beautiful and many provide some decent slopes for snowboarding and skiing. It would certainly be a Greece holiday with a difference.
The ski experience these resorts provide is unique to say the least. You can enjoy a lot of sunshine whilst on the slopes, allowing for exceptional views. After a morning on the slopes, you can head down to the seaside for a Mediterranean lunch in the afternoon.
River Trekking in Central Greece
Another exciting way to spend a day while on a luxury holiday in Greece is to trek the rivers of Karpenisi and Arkadia. Your trek will combine walking along the beautiful river banks, wading through the water and swimming. You don't need any special equipment or to be an experienced river trekker. You just need a pair of comfortable shoes you don't mind getting wet, and a very strong waterproof bag to keep your things dry when the water gets deep.
The best places for river trekking while on your Greece holiday are Karpenisi in Evritania, Central Greece, and Arkadia, in Peloponnese. In Karpenisi, you can trek along the river banks and wade through the water of the Krikelopotamos, making your way up to the waterfalls of Panta Vrechei. In Arkadia, you will find a little bit a paradise, as you trek through a beautiful part of the Neda Gorge, which will led you to a natural pool under a waterfall. Make your way over narrow cliffs, stone, bridges, underwater caves and beautiful waterfalls, as you trek to the secluded pool.
Photography in the Mountains
Inspired photographer, Andre Bakker, runs short 4-day photography courses in Zagoria, and it as an interesting and unique way for you to appreciate your surroundings whilst on a luxury holiday in Greece. This passionate man found inspiration in the mountains of Northern Greece, finding the unspoiled wild mountains, and their diverse animal and plant populations, perfect for photography.
You don't need to know much about photography to go on one of his courses, and he will cater for any level. You can see the beauty of the region as he leads you on photo-walks through beautiful mountain spots and traditional villages in Zagoria.
