The town of Malaga is probably one of the more well known names of the Costa del Sol that includes over a dozen towns. This area, which can be translated into English as the sunshine coast constitutes one of Spain's most popular tourist areas.
Do not be deceived when considering this region as a choice of vacation, as although the beaches are a major attraction of the Costa del Sol, this area hosts more than just stretches of sandy beaches. The Costa del Sol also features fishing villages, golf, bullfights, casinos and places of historical and cultural importance.
Nerja
The Costa del Sol area does include several attractive towns and places of interest, but this article concentrates on the fishing village of Nerja which prides itself on 16 kilometers of golden shores.
The Caves of Nerja
The Nerja Caves which were discovered in 1959 today represent one of Spain's greatest tourist attractions. These fascinating caves are situated about three kilometers from the town center. At these caves, visitors are able to view historic wall paintings, a huge central column, separate caverns and galleries and impressive stalactites and stalagmites. It is interesting to note that this large column is featured in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's biggest column. There is an area inside the cavern that is about 700 meters long which visitors may enter. Travelers to these caves may also view galleries and other parts of the caves from a distance, as access is either difficult or impossible. It is interesting to note that skeletal remains on view inside the Nerja caves, suggest that people lived inside these caves from approximately 25,000 B.C. During the summer months a particular part of the cave area is used as a natural setting for the staging of concerts and ballets, offering about 100 seats. It is said that there are hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Nerja caves every year and while in this area, it would certainly be a shame to miss out on a visit.
There is a choice of hotels and plenty of holiday villas and self-catering apartments for rent in Nerja itself. With regards to accommodation, it is also possible to find a place to stay in the town of Malaga, which is at a distance of approximately 50 kilometers from Nerja. Never before has it been so easy to plan your vacation from home. The Internet today hosts a mine of information regarding holiday destinations and in addition, details of vacation accommodation may easily be found on the Web. Once you have made a decision and would like to settle your arrangements, hotel and apartment reservations, may also be made over the Internet.
The Costa del Sol area certainly has a great deal to offer. A few days in this sunny resort and visitors soon understand why the Costa del Sol is such a popular area for tourists.
