Sheffield is a city in yorkshire, britain. it was given its name because the city originated in a field on the River Sheaf. sheffield's population was estimated at 525 800 people in 2006, & it is one of the eight biggest british cities outside London.

It's historically an industrial city, which is famous for manufacturing steel. The city's steel manufacturing heritage was shown in the 1997 british film, The Full Monty.

By the 14th century, Sheffield was already famous for the manufacturing of knives, and by the 1600s it was at the heart of cutlery production in the united kingdom. These industries led to sheffield's rapid growth, which saw the town being made a borough in 1843 and being made a city in 1893.

Sheffield remaind a significant industrial city throughout the first part of the twentieth century, but world wide competition led to the closing of numerous steelworks from the early seventies.

As we've already mentioned, Sheffield is a city of culture. This means that it's got plenty of fantastic museums & art galleries to explore.

One of the finest museums is Bishop House. constructed around 1500, Bishop House is the most well preserved timber-framed residence in Sheffield. it's placed at the peak of Meersbrook Park & has been lived in by numerous different families over the years[/MARK Now it's open as a museum & has some pretty period furniture, which gives the visitor a real taste of old england.

Boasting meadowhall shopping centre & a fantastic high-street, Sheffield is a fabulous place for shoppers. in fact, you will find everything from quirky independent stores to renowned names including New Look & hmv.

If you'd rather explore the great outdoors, you will be pleased to know that Sheffield has 2 million trees, nearly 80 parks & ten public gardens. These are the ideal place to unwind & enjoy a quiet picnic.

Sheffield is renowned for its fantastic nightlife, which means that its visitors are always in for a treat. whether you would prefer to sip a cocktail in one of the city's exclusive bars or a quick pint of cider in one of its rustic inns, you'll find things for everyone to enjoy in this city.

In addition to these watering holes, Sheffield also has a handful of great nightclubs & live music venues. These include the leadmill & the Red House.

Sheffield has fantastic road links & can be reached easily from most massive british cities. as well as this, the city is well served by rail, with frequent trains running from Sheffield railway station to a vast range of destinations throughout the uk.

There is also an airport close by, Doncaster Sheffield Airport. The airport is placed 18 miles from the city centre & is served mainly by cheaper airlines, including Thomsonfly.
