Kathryn Lively writes for Currituck County tourism in the Outer Banks, and for FlowCushion, the seat cushion for travel.
Each year sees thousands of visitors to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the easternmost point in the state and perhaps one of the more popular summer destinations on the East Coast. With miles of access to the Atlantic Ocean and pleasant weather in the summer months, the Outer Banks provides a wealth of fun and enjoyment for families on vacation. A stay in Nags Head, in particular, offers the opportunity for a wonderful time.
Of all the town dotting the Outer Banks area, Nags Head is arguably the most commonly known among tourists. Having been established as a resort area in the early 1800s, Nags Head remains synonymous with relaxation, sun, and natural beauty. An extended stay in Nags Head allows visitors to explore the entire Outer Banks while also taking in some of the local flavor to encourage a lifetime of memories.
What to Do
Jockey's Ridge State Park - Here visitors will find the largest natural sand dune system in the country. Miles of sand, far as the eye can see, evoke a feeling of being in the desert, though ocean relief is not far away. Jockey's Ridge is a popular spot for sandboarding - surfing without water - and hiking.
Jennette's Fishing Pier - Perhaps the oldest fishing pier in the Outer Banks, Jeanette's is an historical landmark that survived the wind and rain of Hurricane Isabel. Now a part of the North Carolina Aquarium Society, visitors can see the ocean up front and learn about the area's fascinating sea life.
Bodie Island Lighthouse - 214 stairs take visitors to the top of this black and white striped lighthouse, another shining star along the Outer Banks coast. This is part of the National Seashore park system and a great place to learn more about the area's nautical past.
Where to Stay
Along the coast of Nags Head stand stately cottages and beach homes available for rental. Being primarily a resort town, visitors may prefer to rent a vacation home for an extended stay, though coastal hotels and motels are available in season. First Colony Inn, also, is a nice bed and breakfast alternative.
An Internet search can easily lead beach goers to real estate agents who specialize in arranging home rentals for holidays. Wherever you decide to stay, though, it is always wise to book early as the Outer Banks can fill up over the summer.
What to Eat
In Nags Head, seafood is king. Blue crabs and tasty local fish, but be sure to make room for old fashioned Carolina barbecue. From fast food to waterfront dining, there is a cuisine style for everybody who comes to Nags Head.
For a memorable summer vacation, try Nags Head in the Outer Banks. Local charm and nautical history make this easternmost point on the state map a popular place to spend quality sun time.
