The exquisite little town of Parga, Greece, is enclosed by mountains thick with olive groves. It is also situated in a secluded bay of the Ionian Sea, in the Epirus region of Greece. The location of Parga, with its houses built amphitheatrically from the coast up to the top of a mountain, gives this small town its striking quality. Visitors will be charmed by Parga which, although located on the mainland, has an island-like ambiance to it.
One of the most popular places in Parga is the Venetian Castle. The Venetian Castle of Parga lies on a hill overlooking the whole town and the Ionian Sea. It was put up by the Venetians during the medieval age but later on the Turks took over the place. There are a lot of appealing architectural details and styles that can be found on the castle, such as the Lion of Venice in the entrance and emblems of Ali Pasha. There are also outdoor cafes on a walking distance that would provide quenching drinks as well as gift shops sells eye-catching souvenirs.
Parga has a Mediterranean climate which assures long, hot summers and short, mild winters. During summer season, there are more than twelve hours of sunshine every day, which allows a vast range of activities, such as sunbathing, taking long walks, swimming and practicing water sports.
Winter months are tranquil in Parga but in April it usually becomes busy again, since many visitors come to spend the Easter break here. As for rainfalls, the North wind coming over the mountains around Parga influences the weather and brings lots of rain in autumn and winter.
Choose the right time of the year to visit this picturesque town, depending on your tastes and favorite activities.
Valtos beach is found to the west of Parga, down the hill where the Venetian castle was built. It takes just a 20-minute walk to get there and it is also accessible by car, bicycle or boat.
Have in mind that, in summer, there is a water-taxi service from Parga harbor to Valtos, which may result very convenient. Valtos is a large beach with a 3-km long coastline; so no matter how crowded it gets, there is always room for everyone.
The beach of Parga is situated within a walking distance from the town centre. It is actually a short strip of sand that overlooks the beautiful and lush green islet of Panagia.
Parga beach has many tourist amenities, including close by hotels, sun beds, umbrella rentals, taverns and seaside cafes. The clean waters and the sport facilities constitute an attraction to visitors. The waterfront close to the beach is the favorite walk side of both locals and tourists.
Agios Ioannis, or Ai-Giannakis as the locals call it, is a small, beautiful beach 6km from Parga. This white-pebbled beach has also white sand and clean, blue waters.
The beach itself consists of a stretch of land surrounded by rocky mountains and low cliffs; these mountains protect the beach from strong winds and bad weather conditions. In consequence, the place is ideal for lying in the sun and swimming; waters are deep enough for a grown-up to swim.
Just a piece of advice to tourists is that they should wear footwear or maybe slippers when swimming since the sea floor is rocky. Visitors will also have the chance to participate in water sports like scuba diving and snorkeling.
