Explore Alicante in Just One Day

The province of Alicante, on the east coast of Spain is located half-way between Valencia and Murcia. The province forms part of the Comunidad Valenciana and Alicante is the second largest city in this region.

The city has undergone important changes in recent years, and what used to be a somewhat neglected port has been transformed into a modern and cosmopolitan city popular with tourist from all over Europe in search of some of the beast beaches in Spain, with clean, almost white sand and lots of sunshine all year round. It is therefore no wonder that Alicante airport is one of the busiest airports in of the Spanish mainland, very close after the airports Madrid, Barcelona and Malaga with regard to the number of passengers who use the airport of Alicante as the gateway to their holiday accommodation on the Costa Blanca.

The city of Alicante is a lively and interesting place with wonderful attractions as well as a lively nightlife and great restaurants and tapas bars. The main tourist attraction of Alicante is the Castillo de Santa Barbara (the castle of Santa Barbara), a big medieval fortress with great views of the city and the bay of Alicante. Stroll around Alicante to discover the numerous cathedrals, churches and museums that can be found throughout the old town.

Other popular attractions in the area are Terra Natura, Terra Mitica and Mundomar. The attractions are located in Benidorm, which is located about 45 km northeast of Alicante and is one main attraction along the Costa Blanca. Surrounded by high mountains, Benidorm is perfectly protected against the cold winds. Therefore, the weather in Benidorm stays very mild even all year round.

In Alicante there are areas of outstanding natural beauty in the nearby mountains like Guadalest of the Cuevas del Canelobre. Guadaleste is a remarkably picturesque village which attracts many tourists who visit the town for its famous castle ruins. Guadalest lies atop a ridge in the Sierra de Aitana Mountains and enjoys wonderful panoramic views offered by its elevated position. The Cuevas del Canelobre lie approximately 25 km northeast of Alicante. Guided tours of the cave are offered at reasonable rates making it a worthwhile excursion from Alicante.

It may not always be easy to get to these spots, but it is well worth it because you will find yourself all alone on some breathtaking country roads. If you want to discover these places on your own we recommend to hire a car at Alicante airport or your holiday resort on the Costa Blanca. Alicante airport is a popular destination with many low cost airlines and you will find a number of car hire companies to choose from when you get of the plane. But if you really want to get a bargain rental car the best thing to do is to book your car hire on the internet as car hire companies in Alicante may be able to offer you lower prices if you book online.

If you visit Alicante in the month of June don't miss the St John's Bonfires which is one of the city's major festivals based on the ancient custom of burning objects to celebrate the summer solstice. The highlight of the event is a fireworks display on the concluding night of this popular festival.
