Explosive Emerald Island of Montserrat

True to its Emerald Isle nickname, the lushness of this 38 square mile pear shaped island evokes Ireland, only with a much milder and sunnier climate.

Once again, the volcanoes provide a plus. That is to say, Montserrats soil is made super fertile from volcanic ash tossed over the fields and meadows of fair Killarney overseas.

You will see no end of tropical greenery and bloomery in this Irish flavoured isle of smiles.
Montserrat is a quiet, laid back island where you can hike, bird watch, snorkel, or enjoy a couple of drinks over a game of dominoes.

As mentioned, it is known as the Emerald Island, what with its mountainous scenery and with plenty of woodland.

It has attracted many rich people to the island and was famous for rock stars recording their.

However much of the population are poor and rely on farming which is for their subsistence.
Before the eruption of 1995, over 12000 people lived on the island but less than 5000 do today.

The tiny Caribbean island was dealt a devastating blow when the Soufriere Hills volcano erupted massively in 1995 and again in 1997.

Almost half the island was rendered uninhabitable, including the capital, Plymouth, which today stands half submerged in volcanic ash and mud.

The effects were not limited to physical destruction. Montserrats economy was severely damaged, and around two thirds of the 12000 population left the island.

The volcano remains active and much of the island is still out of bounds, but this in itself is a draw for tourists looking for something beyond the usual Caribbean experience of beaches and luxury resorts.

The island of Montserrat is located approximately 480 km or 300 miles east to southeast of Puerto Rico and 48 km or 30 miles Southwest of Antigua.

It comprises only 104 km or 40 square miles and is increasing gradually owing to volcanic deposits on the southeast coast of the island.

The Island is only 16 km or 10 miles long and at least 11 km or 7 miles wide, with dramatic rock faced cliffs rising 15 to 30 m or 50 to 100 feet above the sea.

And with smooth bottomed sandy beaches scattered among coves on the west side of the island, Montserrat has been a quiet haven of extraordinary scenic beauty and near perfect climate.

Montserrat has only two islets on the Island, Which these are Little Redonda and Virgin.
