Feel the essence of womanhood at Khajuraho temples

At the very first sight , the intricate and exquisite sculptures of the Khajuraho temples will surely mesmerized you. The name Khajuraho is derived from the Sanskrit term 'Kharjur' meaning date palm . It is located in the Chahatarpur district of Madhya pradesh .

The sensuous sculptures of Khajuraho temples are dedicated to the womanhood. These temples are the best example of excellent craftsmanship where every facets and moods of life are very well depicted.

Initially there were 85 temples but now the number has reduced to only 22 temples. So UNESCO has designated these temple premise as a World Heritage site to restore the rich culture of the Chandela dynasty. Chandravan , the first Chandela ruler has started the creation of these temples in 11th century but later on his successors has completed the temples. These temples are unique in their own sense because they are renowned not for their deities but for their sensuous and erotic sculptures.

In present time Khajuraho temples are divided into three groups - western , eastern and southern temples. Among all the temples in Khajuraho , the largest temple is the Kandariya Mhadeva, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva . It is 31m in height. The Jagadambi and Chitragupta temples are the royal temples belong to the western group of temples. Other temples of western groups are Chaunsat yogni, Vishwanath temple , Lakshamana temple . The temples in eastern group are Parsavanatha Temple, Ghanti Temple, Adinatha Temple, Vamana Temple, Javari Temple. And the temples in southern group are Duladeo Temple and Chaturbhuja Temple.

Except Chausath-Yogini, Brahma and Mahadeva temples which are of granite, all the other temples are of fine-grained sandstone, buff, pink or pale yellow in colour.

Khajuraho temples are also a pilgrimage site for Jains. The three temples in the eastern group are dedicated to Jainism and has some of the very first Tirthankaras. The important attraction in the Ghantai Temple is the Multi-armed Jain goddess which is perched on a winged Garuda.

Siberian cranes gathered near the lake, surrounding the Khajuraho , provides a visual delights to the tourists. The enjoyment of an evening boat ride in the pristine water of lake is unmatched to any other enjoyment. So don' t miss the boat cruise.

Every evening in the open lawns of Khajuraho temple complex, a well made light and sound show is shown for 1 hour. Both in English and Hindi language , these shows covers the history , philosophy and art of these temples.
