Czech capital - Prague is not a very big city, but it's, without any doubt, one of the most beautiful European cities. In 1992 UNESCO included historical part of Prague in its World Cultural Heritage list. Here Czech, German and Jewish traditions are mixed to create a unique Prague image.
The history of Prague dates back to the X century. In the Middle Ages it was one of the centers of the Roman Empire and the third biggest city of Europe. Later it belonged to the Hasburg dynasty and Dual Monarchy of Austria and Hungary. Since its very beginning there were several settlements on the area of the present Prague, but in 1784 six towns - Prazsky Hrad, Hradcany, Mala Strana, Stare Mesto, Nove Mesto and Vysehrad united to become one single city - Prague.
Prazsky Hrad and Hradcany were founded in about 870 AD, but the complex of the buildings and cathedrals of that period was rebuilt several times. The oldest and the most outstanding of its attractions is St. Vitas Cathedral. Its construction took almost thousand years - the main facade was finished only by 1929.
Mala Strana is the most romantic part of Prague, leading to the hill where Hradcany is located. In the Middle Ages it was a district of craftspeople, but now it's the place of palaces, embassies, cathedrals and churches. It has always been the most artistic part of the city. Comparing with other Prague districts, Mala Strana is a relatively quiet and peaceful place, ideal for shopping.
Stare Mesto - Old town - is the center of the medieval Prague with its narrow streets, gothic houses with black brick facades and ancient churches. Now it's also the center of the international business activity and night life. Stare Mesto square was the main square of the Royal Prague, here the main market was located. Charles' bridge built in this district in XIV century is the symbol of the city. Now it's decorated with 30 statues.
Nove Mesto or New Town is the youngest part of Prague. It was laid by the end of the Middle Ages but really completed only in the XIX century. Vaclav square is the modern center of the city life with its shops, offices, discos, casino and restaurants.
Vysehrad is located on the hill in the southern part of the city with the exiting panorama. This place was inhabited even in the pre-historic times. The most of the structures were destroyed during different wars but some of them were restored. Now the major sightseeing in Vysehrad is the Cathedral of the Saint Paul and Peter.
