Great Tips for Procuring your New York Jets Tickets

New York Jets Tickets

The New York Jets play in the Eastern Division of the American Football Conference in the National Football League (NFL), and play their home games at the Giants Stadium, which is also home to the other professional football team of New York – the New York Giants. The Jets, however, prefer calling their base The Meadowlands, as the stadium bears the name of their rival NFL team. The Giants Stadium is located in the Meadowlands Sports Complex, a massive complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

At present, the New York Jets train on Long Island, at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. Their new training facility as well as their corporate headquarters is coming up at Florham Park, New Jersey.

The Team History

The Jets were originally named the New York Titans, and started as charter member of the American Football League (AFL), in 1960. Sony Werblin, head of Music Corporation of America (MCA), who along with Leon Hess was part of a group that bought the team in 1963, renamed it the New York Jets. After the AFL-NFL merger, the Jets joined the NFL.

The New York Jets caused one of the biggest upsets in American sports history on January 12, 1969. Playing as underdogs in the third AFL-NFL World Championship Game - but the first to officially bear the name Super Bowl – they defeated the NFL champions, the Baltimore Colts, 16-7, at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida.

As Titans, the Jets played their home games at New York’s Polo Grounds up to 1963. Werblin and Hess decided to relocate to the Shea Stadium, and the New York Jets made their home there for 20 seasons, from 1964 to 1983. During this time, the Stadium hosted three playoff games involving the Jets: the 1968 AFL Championship – beating the Oakland Raiders, 27-23; a 1969 AFL Divisional playoff – losing 13-6 to the Kansas City Chiefs; and the 1981 AFC Wild Card Playoff – losing 31-27 to the Buffalo Bills.

From 1984 onwards, the New York Jets are based at the Giants Stadium. The Jets will be moving to their new home – the New Meadowlands Stadium, which is expected to come up by 2010.

Today, the New York Jets is owned by Robert Wood Johnson IV, heir of Johnson & Johnson, who bought the team from the estate of Leon Hess, who had earlier bought out his partners.

The Jets have retired three jersey numbers to honor their great players. These are:

#12 - Joe Namath
#13 - Don Maynard
#73 - Joe Kleck
