The Greek island of Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands in the Aegean Sea and lies just 11 miles off the west coast of Turkey. Considered to be the sunniest place in Europe, Rhodes is known as the island of light due to its subtropical climate and the 3000 hours of sun it enjoys every year.
Tourists embarking upon Rhodes holidays will touch down at Rhodes airport in the North. Heading from the airport down the east coast of Rhodes you will first reach the islands capital Rhodes town which is a great base from which to explore the rest of the island. Rhodes town is split in two, the medieval old town and the modern new town. The new town has all the amenities you’d expect of a modern city whilst the old town is a labyrinth of cobbled streets full of history. The entrance to Rhodes harbour is where the colossus statue, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, is said to have stood before it was destroyed in an earthquake in 226BC. Holiday makers can still see the plinths at the entrance to the harbour where it is rumoured the sculpture once stood. Rhodes town is the heart of the island and has a wide array of excellent bars, restaurants and nightclubs.
Futher down the coast, Faliraki is one of the liveliest resorts on the island and is an ideal choice for young holiday makers with partying on their mind as there is no shortage of bars and clubs in Faliraki catering for all tastes. Faliraki has a long sandy beach where you will find all sorts of watersports including windsurfing, sailing and jetskiing. Youngsters will also love the waterpark and funfair in the centre of Faliraki.
The resort of Lindos is one of the hottest places in Rhodes thanks to the shelter it receives from the steep hills which surround it. Lindos village is a national landmark and a preservation order prevents any major developments being built and any vehicles from passing through. This, along with the whitewashed buildings gives Lindos the authentic look and feel of a traditional Greek village. One of the must-see sights in Lindos for Rhodes holidays makers is the Lindos Acropolis which sits at the top of the hills high above the village. Tourists can catch a donkey ride to the top to take a look around the ancient ruins and enjoy the views from the summit. Holiday makers visiting Lindos have a choice of three beaches in the resort, offering a variety of watersports and a moderate selection of beachside tavernas. Although not as lively as Faliraki, Lindos still has a good nightlife with a few dozen bars and clubs that stay open until the early hours.
South of Lindos, Lardos is a quiet resort ideal for families and couples looking for a relaxing week in the sun. Lardos bay has an excellent sand and shingle beach which is very rarely crowded and is an ideal spot to unwind. The majority of the entertainment in Lardos is found in the bars and tavernas that surround the friendly central square of Lardos village, approximately one mile from Lardos bay.
