Historical Importance
The 42m high stately gate stands tall at Rajpath, near Janpath road that leads to the Rashtrapati Bhavan or President's house. It is an All India war memorial designed in the year 1921 by Edwin Lutyen, who is known to have designed the city of New Delhi that we see today. It was built in the memory of 90,000 soldiers who died during World War I whose names are inscribed on the walls. And an addition list of 13,516 names engraved on the arch is in the memory of soldiers killed in Afghan War of 1919. Another memorial is the Amar Jawan Jyoti that remains illuminated day and night in remembrance of the soldiers who died in India-Pakistan War of December 1971.
