The state of Kansas is known for its Native American cultural history and its many cowboy towns but the state has more to offer than old west nostalgia and rich Native American history. The state is home to a number of wineries and breweries, tantalizing restaurants, ranches, scenic natural surroundings, and historical and cultural landmarks. From Dodge City to Lawrence to Wichita you can find numerous Kansas adventures for the whole family to enjoy. Kansas is even a terrific place for a romantic getaway or some time with old or new friends. Kansas is a great place for history buffs to visit. The state is home to numerous historic forts, trails, towns, railroads, and cultures. Visitors to the state will have the chance to tour the same trail traveled by the famed Lewis and Clark and have the opportunity to get a glimpse at where Independence Day was born. Visitors who take the Santa Fe Trail or the Oregon Trail will have a great opportunity to catch a glimpse of the remains from wagons heading out west during the 19th century. Along the Chisholm and Western Cattle Trails those who visit the state of Kansas will be able to take the same route taken by more than five-million cattle during the second half of the 19th century. And don't forget the trail of the Pony Express where the curious can explore the path that travelers took in 1860 to cross the Missouri River. There are a number of forts in the state of Kansas as well and the list includes such famed sites as Fort Larned, Fort Scott, and Fort Riley. There is also a wide variety of museums that explore the rich Native and African American histories as well, including a number of sites that were part of the Underground Railroad. Any history buff can enjoy all the rich history that can be found throughout the state of Kansas.
The natural surroundings are something to be enjoyed in Kansas as well. The state is home to a total of 3,500 parks, each offering something unique to the visitors who can't get enough of the great outdoors. For those visitors who love water activities there is a total of 24 reservoirs and 40 state lakes perfect for fishing as well as three major rivers which include the Arkansas River, the Kansas River, and the Missouri River. Many visitors come here every year to enjoy the wide variety of outdoor activities that are available for year-round enjoyment. Camping is also a popular pastime for those who visit Kansas as well. In fact there are 23 state parks that offer a variety of camping experiences that the family will love, including 14 that offer both modern and primitive camping. Whatever it is you enjoy, whether it be outdoors or having to do with history, Kansas is the place to take your vacation.
