Keeping Money Safe While Traveling

One of the only negative thing to consider while traveling is your money. Many people say that only cash is king, while some swear by travelers cheques. However, a new option has come to play. Consider the option of a Travel Money Card.

Prepaid Travel Money Cards are similar to a debit or credit card. They have a VISA or Mastercard logo on them, so they are welcome anywhere that VISA/Mastercard are accepted. They are prepaid, so you decide how much you are going to load onto your card. Your balance can be easily tracked online or by phone, so you'll always know how much you have left to spend. Also, in a pinch, money can be added onto the card if emergencies arise. And the best part? Cash can be withdrawn from the card in case a situation comes up where you need cash fast.

When registering your Travel Money Card online, you can ensure that in case your card is lost or stolen, your card can be replaced. Also, this card is safe from identity theft - when you are out and about traveling, you do not have to carry any of your cards that are at risk for stolen information.

Ahead of time you 'pre-load' the amount of money that you have decided to budget into your currency card account, choose your currency (usually dollar, sterling pound, or Euro), your card is mailed to you and is similar to a typical credit or debit card, and you activate your account when you are ready. You can use the prepaid credit card anywhere where it is accepted, and it is similar to a traveler's check in many ways. The Mastercard and Visa prepaid travel money cards are more readily accepted across the world compared to other cards.

When traveling out of the country, do your research at home before you leave for your trip. Check out the best places to exchange your money before you enter into a country with a different currency than your own. Many of the major search engines offer multiple options to help travelers have a smooth and happy experience while out of their country of origin. Using a debit and/or credit card while traveling can give travelers a sense of peace greater than if they carried cash, but in the event that a card is lost or stolen, having a replacement issued can create a lot of hassle.

A smart traveler will plan ahead for many of these circumstances. Prepaid cards are an excellent option, seeing as you can manage your account online or by phone, and in the event your card is lost or stolen, you have not placed your whole identity at risk.

One last tip to remember is not to change money at an airport because the exchange rate is apt to be high. Using a travel prepaid credit card, you will generally get a higher exchange rate than normal bank rates, and these cards are usually commission-free. Also, your exchange rate is set, so you don't have to worry about fluctuating rates.
