Laikipia Tented Camp Lodge & Hotel Information

Laikipia district Kenya is located in the central region of Kenya, on the equator. The stunning scenery is home to vast open plains in the shadows of Mount Kenya, Laikipia has something for everyone, from wildlife conservation, activity holidays & safaris or spa retreats, horse riding safari, luxury mobile tented camps, hotels accommodation .There is an annual Lewa Downs Cross Country marathon, a grueling 26 mile race at 3,000 meters. Wildlife population densities in the Laikipia region now rank second to the internationally renowned Maasai Mara ecosystem in Kenya, and the Big 5 are frequently seen.

Laikipia district is also home to Kenya's black rhino, a protected species and the second largest herds of elephant in Kenya. It is also the only area in Kenya to view the Jackson's Hartebeest. The diverse scenery from the edge of the Great Rift Valley, to the peaks of Mount Kenya, with dusty plains and verdant grasslands, interspersed with rocky hills, rivers, and waterholes. The so-called "Ewaso ecosystem" is larger than all of Kenya's protected areas except Tsavo and has more wildlife than all other parks and reserves except the Maasai Mara.

Mutamaiyu House - Laikipia - Mutamaiyu House is located on Mugie Ranch situated at the northern end of the Laikipia plateau in northern Kenya. Described by a recent visitor as "Heaven on a Hill", it is a magnificent family owned house built in a grove of ancient, twisting olive trees. Mugie Ranch is a forty-nine thousand acre working ranch that rolls out across the Laikipia plains on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, home now to all the "Big Five" since the introduction of rhino in 2002.

Loisaba safari lodge has 7 rooms, each with an en-suite bathroom and private deck built into the escarpment. All the furniture is handmade and the lodge has a swimming pool and tennis court. There is also a two bedroom cottage available with a private garden and cliff-top swimming pool - perfect for honeymooners or families.

Borana Safari lodge is an exclusive lodge perched on the edge of a valley meandering out of the Laikipia Plateau. Blending into the craggy stone outcrops of the escarpment, the lodge has 6 holiday cottages clustered around a main building.

Ol Malo Lodge Hotel is in Laikipia and has four wonderful cottages built from natural rock with thatched roofs and ancient olive wood furniture. Ol Malo means 'place of the greater Kudu' and there is an attractive infinity swimming pool whose far edge overlooks a waterhole where leopard, elephant, buffalo and plains game regularly come to drink.

Sabuk Lodge is a striking safari lodge perched high on a cliff above the Ewaso Nyiro River in Laikipia. Unique in design, the main lodge and 5 cottages are all open fronted with dramatic views into the river gorge and towards the distant outline of Mt Kenya.

Tassia Lodge captures all elements of the African bush, tranquil beauty combined with excitement and adventure. The dramatic setting of the lodge, perched on the edge of the Mokogodo escarpment, gives a mesmerizing view of the Northern Frontier District and the sacred Lolokwe Mountain. Tassia was built for the Mokogodo Massai, allowing a symbiotic relationship with community and conservation.

Elephant Watch Safari Camp - perched on a sloping riverbank beneath great Kigelia and Acacia trees, is home to some of the largest elephant bulls in Samburu. Greater Kudu and impalas stop by to eat seedpods, as do a multitude of birds and monkeys, and sometimes a leopard comes to hunt in the darkness.

Lewa Safari Camp is situated in the foothills of Mount Kenya in the privately owned Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. The conservancy has gained a reputation for being a pioneer in wildlife preservation. A member of the Laikipia Wildlife Forum, the conservancy is a non-profit organization whose objectives are to preserve wildlife within its borders.

El Karama Lodge - El Karama Ranch/Reserve, situated on the Laikipia Plateau between Mount Kenya and the Great Rift Valley, is a family owned and run ranch. At an altitude of 5700 feet the climate is pleasant, and the scenery: rolling savannah and bushland, rocky ranges of hills and meandering rivers is pristine and beautiful.

Porini Rhino Camp is located in Ol Pejeta Conservancy a 90,000 acre wildlife conservancy situated between the foot hills of the Aberdares and the magnificent snowcapped Mount Kenya. Ol Pejeta Conservancy boasts an astounding variety of animals including all the "Big Five" (the endangered black rhino, leopard, elephant, buffalo and lion) as well a sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees and also incorporates the smaller Sweetwater's Game Reserve.

Kicheche Laikipia - This small camp is set on the equator, in the heart of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, at the foot of Mount Kenya. The tents are nestled at the edge of an indigenous forest and overlook a permanent waterhole. Kicheche Laikipia has six well appointed tents with adjoining bathrooms and generous veradahs, providing great views over the waterhole and Mount Kenya. There is also a dining and lounge tent, although meals are frequently taken outside, weather permitting.
