It wasn’t that long ago that one rushed off to the library when planning one’s travels. In South Africa, where travel and tourism is an important but an unnaturally small industry when compared to the income generated elsewhere, the library or your trusted travel agent was the place to start.

Word of mouth guiding one to personally recommended Hotels, pleasant experiences of one’s friends also helped. The internet is merely some fifteen or so years old, with users expected to double over the next three years, still in it’s infancy stage but some 70% of all travel bookings are made via the net.

We do business with other types of companies that have celebrated their centenary and we think they are old…in internet terms, five years is old. To those of you who are over fifty and went to school when perhaps slide rules were the order of the day, perhaps lucky enough to be allowed to use a calculator toward the end of your school years….you will appreciate what has happened over recent times.

Arguably, our generation, those of us over forty years, contributed hugely to the onset of the, let’s call it the information technology revolution, what with mobile phones, personal computers, IPods and MP3 players, personal organisers et al….. how old were you when you learned about the industrial revolution; when stone age man invented the wheel; when man conquered space (a turn of phrase)…well the internet and other forms of the “digital revolution” will go down in history as one of the periods that changed the way we think.

Going back to holidays and travel arrangements, surf the net, in South Africa we have some stunning sites offering an array of tourism services, for obvious reasons my favourite is staysa.co.za, book a Hotel, plan your holiday; how do book a flight or perhaps a guest lodge. Yes, there are still travellers who go the traditional route of the suburban travel advisor or agent, I do think there remains a need, if you need destination information, cannot type and do not have access to a computer, this is for you. For the rest of us, type in “holiday house rent Port Alfred” and you will be amazed how easy it really is, faced with more opportunities and information than anyone would ever need. You will be invited to visit sites with information; with holiday homes to rent; B&B and guesthouse accommodation catering for every need or desire.

For the newer cyber travellers, here are a few tips….

  • Type in accurate and meaningful key words into a good search engine is the first step. Just to type the words “accommodation Knysna” will result in thousands and thousands of options. One needs to be as specific as possible, if it is a holiday house you want to rent say so, a guest house say so.
  • If you are in South Africa, select the “South African Sites only” button if your search engine has one. This will succeed in eliminating sites not specialising in your chosen area.
  • Once your search results are visible, read the small print, ensure that the site you click on is really an accommodation site, usually clearly visible in the site name or visible phrase in the summary. Don’t hesitate to go to any site clearly matching your need in the top ten pages.
  • Once selecting the site, if the first page is clear’ professional and a dedicated accommodation portal, then stay there and search further, if not, click on your “back” key and select another one.
  • On a chosen site, search for the accommodation you require and without hesitation, when finding what you want send them an enquiry giving required dates; number of persons and contact detail.
  • Once you have done this on one site, go to two others and do the same thing, sending a total of three enquiries. The principal being that you will select the company and/or accommodation that offers you the quickest; most efficient and professional service provided they have met your needs.
  • Once you have made the booking, ensure you print the confirmation e-mail and/or whatever documents are available, file this with your other travel papers, relax and look forward to a well planned holiday.

Never forget to always either send a confirmation e-mail and/or phone the establishment a day or two before my arrival….perhaps I am over cautious but this is better than problem on arrival. Here’s wishing you a great holiday.

By: Alan Hawkins | 27/10/2009 | Travel
Buzz words abound on this subject…service delivery…a service industry…service is our secret. Tourism and travel is about service, as the South African tourism industry looks forward to the 2010 Soccer World cup and hopefully toward fully booked Hotels and bed and Breakfasts, we need to strive and step forward to the plate, it is about service.

The great cell phone rip off...

You’ve seen the news, read the Sunday times and it would appear we can look forward to some reduced mobile phone call rates in South Africa. About time, we need to understand the international visitor to South Africa, the holiday maker who has travelled from Europe on a long haul flight, does not want to pay more for accommodation, a beer, a pizza and last of all, for calls from his mobile phone.

Arriving at one’s destination to find it not available is probably one of every traveller’s fears. This fear can obviously be eliminated or at least made highly probably with careful and disciplined planning and preparation…so one would think. Travelling in South Africa is, as has been said before, one of the worlds best kept travel secrets. South Africa offers visitors great accommodation options to suit all tastes and also some extremely efficient and well known travel agents and accommodation portals.

Take a break, you deserve it

For most families the past year has been pretty hectic to say the least, with any thought of a holiday confined into a blurry background. The stress of a suboptimal economy and numerous escalating costs combining into a formidable frontal attack on us mere mortals from all directions, our energy and effort seems to have gone towards survival rather than recreation.

To 2010 and beyond.....

By: Alan Hawkins | 12/08/2009 | Travel
Do not be misled however, it’s not actually about 2010, a purple patch for the tourism and service industry during which time, all beds will be booked, Hotels humming and airports busy, the advantages should be leveraged into long term benefit.
