Los Angeles, Ca - Automotive

If there is one trait that Los Angeles, CA has become famous for, it's the city's unrequited love affair with its automobiles. The city has more than 25 winding freeways, which take care of commuters, automotive and otherwise, on a daily basis. Not surprisingly, Los Angeles remains the most automobile-populated metro area in the entire world, with one registered car for every one and a half persons.

SoCal's freeways, along with the area's beaches, palm trees, and movie studios are all major trademarks of the West Coast region. As previously noted, it is unlikely that any other city in the world has taken to the automobile as fully as Los Angeles. The extensive freeway system is dispersed throughout the still quickly growing area, connecting urban centers with both suburbs and exurbs.

Taking things a step further, the Art Center College of Design has assisted in making Southern California a hotbed for car design. Automakers such as Honda, BMW, Toyota, Ford, VW, Hyundai, and GM all have design studios in the area.

To sound a negative note, Los Angeles is well known for its longstanding under-funding of road upkeep, no doubt partly due to the city's huge total area. This causes a humongous number of potholes, leading to high vehicle maintenance costs for local denizens. Extreme angst over potholes was a major factor in the attempted 2002 secession of the San Fernando Valley county.

With so much traffic, certain portions of Los Angeles' roads are hopelessly gridlocked at rush hour. Unfortunately, collector streets and local roads are usually all equally jammed, so there are no available detours.

To no one's surprise, with so many automobiles on the road, red light running is common. To deal with this, mounted cameras have been procured for many problem intersections. The cameras activate when an automobile runs a red light and then without ceremony sends a ticket to the person's registered address. No systems is perfect, however, and there was a huge fuss raised when it was ascertained that specific intersections with cameras did more to generate revenue in fines than to help with public safety.
