Traveling abroad can be daunting and the cost of accomodations and flights is a major concern for the prudent traveler. One of the favorite Mediterranean destinations is Cyprus. It is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and shares it's history with both Greece and Turkey. It is a lovely island with many monuments, castles, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
The peak season, and therefore the most expensive, is July and August. During this time Cyprus is dry and hot with the average temperatures in the 80's making it ideal for sightseeing and sun-bathing. The off season winter months are December and January and you will encounter rain and sonw on the Toodros Mountains. Don't let the thought of rain and snow deter you because the temperatures average in the mid 50's.
When looking for the lowest fares to Cyprus, your flight will take you into either Larnaca or Paphos. Larnaca is the largest international airport on Cyprus and is an easy two hour drive to such sights as Nicosia, Limossal and Paphos. In the time of the Romans, Pahpos was the island's capital. It is known for it's lovely beaches, villages, the baths of Aphrodite and the catacombs.
The biggest thing to watch for when booking a low cost flight to Cyprus is whether the price that you are looking at actually includes all of the taxes. Taxes and fees such as airport fees, baggage fees, fuel fees, and other taxes can almost double the cost of the ticket. Some sites quote only the ticket price to draw you in and you do not find out about the taxes and other fees until you click on the "buy ticket" button. Buying a ticket over the phone can add a fee, usually about $10.00, to the cost. To make sure that you get the best deal, always check to make sure that the cost that you are looking at includes all of the taxes and fees.
It is also necessary to understand how Cyprus is divided by a "green line". If you enter Cyprus north of the UN patrolled green line your entrance into Cyprus can be viewed as illegal by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus. This can cause frustration, anxiety and possible deportation, so researching where and how you enter is necessary. Your passport should be valid for at least three months past the time that you anticipate leaving Cyprus. Make sure that the flight that you book will allow for cancellations and flight changes without extra fees.
Low cost flights to Cyprus are available, and time of year will make a difference in the total cost. For example, if you choose to fly from Seattle, Washington to Larnaca, Cyprus in July, the cost can be anywhere from $1750 to $6136 for a round trip ticket. The same destination with the trip taken in December ranges from $1113 to $5536. This is a substantial savings for the traveler, especially if you enjoy cooler temperatures for your sightseeing. If you need to book a ticket in a hurry and do not have time to pre-book, one of the best sites is ASAPtickets Onetravel. This sites updates flights hourly and can often get a flight that, including tax, is actually cheaper than the price that you would pay by booking ahead. For example, I found that I could get a round trip ticket to Larnaca, Cyprus leaving in April for $750.00 including tax. That is a savings of over $300.00 but I would have to be ready to leave right away.
The bottom line on low cost tickets is that no matter when you decide to fly, you need to be a very careful shopper and make sure that you will not be surprised by taxes or fees. Take the time to explore all the sites and compare the cost of the ticket, when you can fly, the seating accomodations and airport destination so that you will get the best deal possible.
