Historic Deerfield’s motto is “New England as you hope to find it!”, and it certainly is. Nestled in western Massachusetts in the 330-year old village of Deerfield, this Museum of New England’s history and art is considered a vital historical portrait of rural New England by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. All of Deerfield’s museums and galleries are located within The Old Deerfield National Historic Landmark, more than a 1,000 acres of scenic views and fecund land that has been farmed for centuries
Historic Deerfield’s many attractions can be viewed via both guided and self-guided tours Deerfield’s heart is the mile-long thoroughfare simply called “The Street.” The Museum is centered on 12 houses dating to the 18th and 19th centuries and 3 exhibition galleries within the Flynt Center of Early New England Life. The town is always abuzz with programs, special events, group tours and village walking tours every season of the year.
Historic Deerfield’s mission is to preserve and interpret the architecture, artifacts and daily life of a prosperous early New England town. The homes and artifacts in Deerfield are among the best and most comprehensively preserved historical buildings in the United States.
Historic Deerfield was incorporated in 1952. The meticulous preservation of the town is in large part the work of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Flynt, of Greenwich, Connecticut. The museum houses, built between 1730 and 1850, and the Flynt Center of Early New England Life, which displays over 25,000 objects made or used in America between 1650 and 1850, are testaments to the Flynt’s generosity and dedication.
Historic Deerfield provides its visitors with a wide array of shopping choices. Guests can choose from a variety of American crafts, jewelry, and gifts for all occasions. Deerfield’s bookstore features countless titles on a number of subjects, such as art, history, craft, and architecture. The children's book section has books for young readers of all ages. The Museum Store and Bookshop also carry gifts for all occasions, museum reproductions and a broad selection of books about early America and the decorative arts (the bookstore is open Daily, year round, 9:30-4:30 except Thanksgiving, Dec. 24 and 25).
Guests to Historic Deerfield are encouraged to stay the night. Lodging is a dream come true thanks to the classic, full-service country inn, which was built in 1884, and is located in the center of the 350-year-old National Historic Landmark village of Deerfield. The Inn features 23 guest rooms with private baths. Breakfast is as good as the bed; the Deerfield Inn uses the finest and freshest naturally raised produce in its restaurant. Breakfast is served daily, and dinner Thursday to Monday. For a quick bite the casual self-service Terrace Café at Historic Deerfield can’t be beat.
Admission prices for an All of Deerfield ticket are $14 for Adults, and $5 for Youths (6-21); Single Tour tickets are $7 for Adults, and $5 for Youths. Admission tickets are good the day of purchase, and the following day.
