As its name suggests, Steamboat Springs CO's Yampa Valley is the site of several geothermal hot springs. The city derived its name from one of the springs' name Steamboat Spring, which is near the local library. This particular spring gives off a steamboat-like sound in the past, before construction and blasting stopped the sounds in 1908.

Two of these hot springs have been converted into a resort and made accessible to the public. Old town Hot Springs is the largest of the two public springs. It has several pools and two water slides. The other one is called the Strawberry Park Hot Springs. This hot spring resort has two pools, landscaped with natural rocks. This event has attracted several international and national playboaters, who eventually join the competitions regularly.
