Kenya is well endowed with great mountains to climb. These include Mount Kenya in Central Kenya, Mount Kilimanjaro at the border with Tanzania, Aberdare Ranges on the Kenyan highlands. Others include Menengai craters and Longonot crater in rift Valley.
Most mountains are very hot when climbing during the day and very cold at night. However some are very cold throughout especially those covered with snow like Mt Kenya and Kilimanjaro.
Going up such mountains require warm clothes to keep your body warm and heavy boots to beat the snow covered tracks.
Mountain climbing in Kenya at most involves camping at night along the way up, this helps your body to adjust to the rising altitudes and relax before going on the next day.
Carrying a waterproof backpack is essential as it protects your items from the humid environment on your way up.
Long trousers and long sleeved shirts are preferable when passing through the bush to avoid scratching. However during the day a light shirt and hard shorts can be won if the area is not bushy.
Drinking water is essential especially during the day, depending on the length of walk and temperatures; this varies from two to five liters.
When walking on stony areas, long trousers can protect you from bruises incase you fall on the way. Boots with grips can also help when walking on steep areas. Ensure your boots are lightweight and allows swelling of your feet during cold weather and waterproof enough to use on marshy and wet areas without soaking your feet.
Always walk during the day when it’s safe and listen to your body. Never force yourself to go up if a health complication occurs.
