Musee d’Orsay is one of the best-known museums in France as well as in the whole world. It houses many French art works of the 19th-20th centuries, including paintings, sculptures, furniture and photography. The collection of the impressionist masterpieces is one of the best in the world.
The museum is situated on the left bank of the Seine River, not far from the Louvre. The building used to be a railway station Gare d’Orsay with the hotel attached to it. But in the 1939 the station was closed, and the hotel ceased to exist in 1973. The Paris government allowed to turn the building into the museum, and in 1973 Musee d’Orsay was opened to general public. The museum is a home for the collection of the 19th century art as well as French avant-garde of the beginning of the 20th century. Its pride and joy are the collections of impressionist and post-impressionist painters, who felt free to create after the French academy lost its total control over the French art in the revolutionary year of 1848.
There is a wonderful selection of works by such revolutionary painters as Manet, Millet and Courbet. Manet, one of the founders of the Impressionism, is represented by his famous and scandalous “Dejeuner sur l’Herbe”(1863) and “Olympia”(1863). Courbet's two monumental canvases, the Funeral at Ornans (1851) and The Painter's Studio (1855) hang opposite each other. Millet is also represented by his best works.
Impressionist and Post Impressionist galleries on the top floor have always attracted much attention. Many of the pictures hanging there need no introduction. The names of the artists are famous to everyone: Manet, Renoir, Monet, Renoir, Callebotte, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Degas and Cezanne…more than enough to enrapture an art admirer!
If you get tired of exploring the galleries, go to the cosy café upstairs. After a well-earned rest, it is worth going on to subsequent work by more esoteric artists - the symbolists Redon and Moreau are well represented. There are also marvellous darkened rooms devoted to pastel drawings - Manet and Degas made particularly beautiful examples.
More compact and manageable than the Louvre, the d'Orsay benefits greatly from the huge iron-clad atrium that hangs over it, flooding the paintings with natural light. With the whole building brilliantly remodelled by architect Gae Aulenti in the 1980s, it is a joy to visit.
Musee d’Orsay is situated at Rue de Lille, 62. It is open daily except Monday from 9.30am to 6pm (until 9.45pm Thu). The entrance ticket costs €7.50; concessions €5.50; under 18s free; free first Sun of every month.

Economical Paris (tips for Travelers)
By: Vasilisa | 12/10/2007 | Travel Tips
The lack of time or money doesn’t mean you’ll have to reject a treat to travel! One can organize a trip in an economical way which nevertheless won’t spoil the general effect. Here are some hints at how one can do it. First of all download all the necessary information (e.g. maps of Paris, museum info, information about monuments and hotels in Paris etc). Book a hotel. Bear in mind that the closer to the center the more expensive the hotels are. Learn some French words and probably buy a guide book. The majority of Frenchmen doesn’t know foreign languages. You’ll have a hard time trying to ask something, so the guide book will be of great value. Buy the tickets (by Air France for instance) – and fly straight to Paris!

Dining in a French Restaurant
By: Vasilisa | 07/12/2007 | Travel Tips
It’s common knowledge that the French are gourmets and aesthetes. That’s why it’s absolutely impossible to go even to the baker’s in trunks and slippers or chew your morning roll in a subway. Unless you want to be looked at with disapproval of course.

How I Made Friends With Paris
By: Vasilisa | 05/10/2007 | Destinations
My friend and I decided to go to Paris to see all the marvels that are boosted all around. Yes. The Tower, the Louvre, the Notre Dame and so on and so forth. Just to find out if it all is really worth admiring. When we finally got to Paris and made our first outing I realized that the information written in one of the booklets was correct. No, not the information about the height of the Eiffel Tower, but the one that advised me to get rid of the high-heeled shoes and to put on something

The Notre Dame, the Louvre…fortunately, these are not all the Paris sights, but unfortunately the tourists often don’t have enough time to study all the attractions of the French capital. To be in Paris without a guide can be a big luck because it allows to have a closer look at the capital, especially if you’re, as the Frenchmen say, “artiste”.

Notes of an Offbeat Tourist
By: Vasilisa | 19/12/2007 | Destinations
I’m an offbeat tourist. I try not to do as the other tourists do and not to go where the others go. I do not try to show-off or something like that. I just leave many places that are considered to be a must-visit behind. That is all. For instance, I haven’t been to the Louvre. It’s not a reason for pride and it’s not a cause for regret. I just didn’t want to race through the halls making short stops near three points (Nike, Venus de Milo, Mona Lisa). This museum is worth being admired for a long time, which I didn’t really have. But I do hope to come to Paris again…

Shopping in Rome (part I)
By: Vasilisa | 20/12/2007 | Destinations
Since the ancient times Rome has been the center of the world trade. Best masters and craftsmen brought here their artworks and goods such as gold, furs, wine and slaves to meet the demands of the rich strata of the society. The trade of the present day follows the traditions of the past. Italian designers have a good reputation due to the fine and luxurious clothes, cotton and leather items (especially bags and shoes) as well as materials for decoration, textiles, ceramic and glass ware.

6 Places to Visit in Rome
By: Vasilisa | 18/04/2008 | Travel
They say there are as many attractions in Rome as there are people. That is even more amazing taking into account the fact that the historical center of Rome is comparatively small: it occupies the space between the Tiber in the East and Termini railway station in the West. Here one can see the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Trevi fountain, the Spanish Steps, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican.
