New York, New York – so Good They Named it Twice

New York City is located on the coast of the North-eastern United States. It is the most populated major city in the United States with around 8,274,527 people living there and has a powerful influence over worldwide commerce, finance, culture and entertainment issues. The city is also very important in the sense of international affairs with it being the home of the United Nations headquarters.

New York City has had many names, when it was first discovered it was called New Angouleme, but shortly changed its name to New Amsterdam. Then in 1664, the English conquered the city and renamed it "New York" after the English Duke of York and Albany. The city has also had a few nicknames ranging from "The City that never sleeps", “Gotham” and the “Big Apple.”

The city has a humid subtropical climate and often has very hot summers. In the winter the temperature does drop but due to the city being on the coast it is kept slightly milder than inland regions.

The city is famous for its huge buildings and skyscrapers and has many fascinating places for you to visit. Some of the most notable places in New York are the Brooklyn Bridge, United Nations Head Quarters, the Statue of Liberty and Times Square.

As well as great architecture, New York is also home to Central Park – the most visited park in the United States with over 30 million visitors each year. New York also has a vast amount of shops selling all sorts of products and is often considered as a shopper’s heaven.

Public Transport is a very popular way of getting around in the City and is used by most of its inhabitants. The city has many taxis, busses, trams and subways you can use to explore the city but you must be prepared for how busy it can become at times.

Accommodation in New York is fairly easy to come across and there are many <a onClick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" href="http://www.travelsupermarket.com/c/hotels/usa/new-york/">hotels in New York </a>.
