Palm Sunday in Kerala

Palm Sunday is celebrated every year throughout Kerala that falls in the month of April.

Palm Sunday is otherwise known as Osana Njayarazhcha or Kuruthola Perunnal in Malayalam. Palm Sunday is celebrated in preparation to the Holy Week. On this day, people go in procession around the church premises or through the streets holding tender palm leaves. The faithful practices this in remembrance of the day on which Jesus Christ’s victorious entry into the city of Jerusalem. ‘Hosanna to the son of David…” the multitude cried out before Christ 20 centuries ago. In remembrance of this incident, hymns of hosanna will be sung throughout the procession.

The blessed palm leaves that are used by the faithful will be preserved at their homes until the Ash Wednesday celebration of coming year. All these palm leaves are burnt on that day and that ash is collected. A sign of cross will be marked on the forehead of each and every Christian member. That marks the beginning of fifty days Lenten fasting. This is practiced in Catholic Churches. In Jacobite churches, the palm leaves are burnt as a part of services during Christmas.

On Palm Sunday, special prayer ceremonies will be held. A remembrance of Christ’s passion is done every church. Salvation history reading will conducted in every church. Every Palm Sunday recalls the final days in Jesus’ life on earth. The Holy Week is the most important week in every Christian’s life. The Romans sentenced Christ to death on this week. Maundy Thursday and Good Friday and Holy Saturday are the important days that accompany Palm Sunday.

St. Joseph Cathedral at Palayam, Thiruvananthapuram is one of the churches that celebrate Palm Sunday with great devotion and piety. A solemn procession will be held through out the main road that reflects depth of faith they have with Christ.
