For those who are wildlife aficionado, Periyar National Park is a paradise in the true sense of the word. High on scenic beauty and rich in bio-diversity, this Park is located in the Cardamom Hills in the enchanting land of Kerala. Also a Tiger Reserve, the Park attracts tourists from all over the world. The beautiful lake passing through this home of a variety of wildlife adds more charm to it. It is a promising site for catching glimpses of exotic wildlife.
The Park boasts of around 2000 kinds of flowering plants and 170 different species of ferns. It is also dotted with a variety of medicinal plants.
Mammals:
The Park houses around 62 species of mammals, some of which come under the tag of 'threatened'. Apart from tiger, the other highlight of the Park is the Indian elephants. Other mammals inhibiting the Park are gaur, barking deer, mouse deer, mongoose, lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, foxes and leopards. The endangered Nilgiri Tahr is also seen here.
Birds:
Treat your eyes with a host of amazing birds such as darters, cormorants, kingfishers, the great Malabar hornbill and racket-tailed Drongos. According to records there are 320 species of birds in the Park.
Reptiles
The Park shelters around 45 species of reptiles such as king cobra, python, lizards, monitor lizards, turtle etc.
Amphibians
There are around 27 different types of amphibians found in the Park.
Fish
According to the records there are 38 species of fish found in the Park.
Insects
Occupying a prized place in the Park, the 160 species of insects found here have their own unique charm.
