Projects Abroad Volunteer in Ghana Organises Fun Run to Raise Funds for Schools

Matt Baker was a teaching volunteer with Projects Abroad in Ghana. The money he raised since returning to the UK has recently been presented to the head teachers of both schools in Ghana where he volunteered. This amount of money will make a huge difference to these school children. Matt tells us:

‘During the summer of 2005, I spent three months teaching at two separate schools in Mamfe, located in the Eastern Region of Ghana. These were the most amazing three months of my life and when the time came to leave, I did not want to go home. Once I arrived back in England, I decided that I wanted to find some way of raising funds for the schools that I taught at. This happened earlier this year, when I successfully took part in a three mile Fun Run in Brentwood, Essex.

My objective for the Fun Run was to raise between £150 and £200, to be split between the two schools. However, after doing presentations and speaking to people about my experiences in Ghana, I was overwhelmed to raise exactly £1000 in sponsorship.

The Apostolic School and Young Souls Academy are, like Ghana as a whole, quite limited in the resources they can offer when compared to the Western World. However, not once did I hear any of the children I taught moan about what they had; they were all so content, grateful and keen to learn whatever they could from us (the volunteer teachers). The Ghanaians were some of the friendliest people that I have ever met; what Ghanaians lack in monetary assets they make up for in the richness of their gracious and welcoming personalities. All of the qualities I have mentioned about the Ghanaian people inspired me during my fundraising. I now hope to be able to re-visit Ghana within the next year to see how the money I raised has been spent at the schools.’
