The extensive Wairarapa region of New Zealand boasts of 3 major forest parks, picture perfect landscapes, small towns, stunning coasts, premium wines along with numerous fine dining options. Sprawled between Wairarapa and Tararua regions in the North Island of New Zealand is the renowned Pukaha Mount Bruce – the wildlife resort with a rich diversity of fauna and flora.
You can get there from Masterton (30km north), Eketahuna (10km south) and with a 1 hour drive from Palmerston North and just couple of hours from Wellington or Napier. Mt. Bruce is open from 9:00am to 4.30pm daily for visitors except on Christmas Day. There is also cafe Takahe operating from 9:00am to 4:00pm.
The Mt. Bruce forest is one of the largest portions of the famous ‘Seventy Mile Bush’ which was once a dense lowland Podocarp forest, extending from Opaki to Norsewood. Bush fires and agricultural development around this area has dwindled its territory, leaving only 3 key woodlands including the Mt. Bruce.
Currently Pukaha Mount Bruce has become an internationally recognized conservation site for breeding New Zealand’s most endangered native species including kiwi, tuatara, kokako, and kaka. The endangered birds that are bred in captivity have been released since 1996 from this park. The remaining forest area - with its endemic Rimu, Rata and Kamahi trees – is also under strict conservation and regeneration. And it includes New Zealand’s national symbol – the silver fern (Cyathea dealbata) carpeting the forest floors amongst various types of tree ferns.
When you visit Pukaha Mount Bruce, you can take an eco tour amidst a primeval forest, spot the feeding stations of different species including birds and eels, and get a first-hand encounter with New Zealand’s most endangered endemic species as well as myriads of interesting fauna and flora.
Entry will be free for children under 5 years and the youngsters from 5 – 15 years will receive a concession rate. You can also partake in various activities such as the interactive displays in the Visitor Centre where you can listen to some of the inspiring tales about the resort, its history, vision and achievements.
The site also offers interpretation displays, conference facilities and guided tours during weekends and public holidays. There is even a souvenir shop teeming with appealing gifts, featuring native themes. What’s more you will receive a lunch voucher which includes a complimentary tea or coffee with food of your choice, to savor from the Cafe Takahe at the premises.
Autumn is the best time to visit Wairarapa, which boasts of a mild climate and ample rainfall. As for your lodging options, there are many hotels in Wairarapa to choose from, including the Copthorne Hotel and Resort Solway Park Wairarapa. These hotels are furnished with a plethora of modern comforts and services, where you can relax and relish the breathtaking panorama of the region, whilst pampering your taste buds with cosmopolitan delicacies.
